The real reason Bad Bunny never showed up at the AMAs

Fans were disappointed that Bad Bunny didn’t grace the stage at the 2020 American Music Awards as promised. Despite teasing a performance of his hit song “Dákiti,” the Puerto Rican singer had to sit out the award show at the last minute. “Bad Bunny was originally set to perform his #1 global hit ‘Dákiti’ with Jhay Cortez live for the first time at the AMAs,” per a press release by Acoustyle Communication (via E! News). The press release continued, “but unfortunately, the artist tested positive for Covid-19, which forced him to cancel the presentation.”

Although Bad Bunny (real name Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio) tested positive for the virus, he was still able to tune in to the festivities virtually from home. He presented the award for favorite Latin female artist, which was won by Becky G. Bad Bunny had reasons to smile despite his test results

While Bad Bunny was surely disappointed that he had to miss the 2020 American Music Awards, he took home some awards of his own, giving him something to smile about despite the unfortunate news. He won the award for Favorite Male Artist in the AMAs Latin category, as well as winning Favorite Latin Album for his work on YHLQMDLG among other awards.

Before fans learned of Bad Bunny’s coronavirus diagnosis, they were very confused about why his highly anticipated performance didn’t go on. “I just realized … aren’t we supposed to have a Doja Cat/Bebe Rexha performance? Bad Bunny too? Like, where they at? #AMAs,” one Twitter user wrote during the event. “I watched the AMA from start to finish because I had the impression Bad Bunny was going to perform. I am baffled,” another added.

Of course, once fans learned of his diagnosis, they were understanding and sent him well wishes. “Noo! Wishing a speedy recovery,” one user wrote, while another tweeted, “Not Bad Bunny!” Although his performance was definitely missed, it seems like he did the right thing for his health and the safety of others by sitting this one out.
