Conspiracy theorists reckon climate activist Greta Thunberg is actually a time traveller after believing they saw a familiar face in a photo dated to the 1890s.

Airing the theory that Thunberg, 19, was sent into the future to stop climate change, some conspiracy theorists have claimed she was spotted in an 1898 photograph.

Depicting a trio of children at a Canadian gold mine in Yukon territory, online conspiracy nutters believe they spotted the climate activist front and centre, The Mirror reported.

Those conspiracy theorists claims, as mad as they are, do depend on the image showing a youngster that looks the spitting image of the Swedish climate activist.

Staring down the camera with a look not at all unfamiliar to those that know of Thunberg's work, the Canadian mining image has struck a chord with conspiracy theorists.

Musician Dean Friedman joked about the image, tweeting: "120-year-old photo sparks theories that climate activist & environmental heroine, Greta Thunberg, is in fact a 'time-traveller' who has travelled through time to save our planet!

"Wishing her all the best and success in her mission to save the earth. We can use the help we can get!"

Some are convinced that Thunberg may have gone back in time and has since returned to the present day like a real-life Marty McFly from Back to the Future.

Despite heading back to the future, the photo of "Thunberg" in the past was taken by Eric Hegg, who was born in the same country as the 19-year-old climate activist.

One key difference though is that the pair were born 136 years apart, making it unlikely that Thunberg and Hegg met, unless, as conspiracy theories say, she travelled back in time.

Author Jack Stranger marked another tongue-in-cheek post, adding: "To those saying 'How can she be in the past if she’s from the future?!?'

"Obviously, as a time traveller, she can travel to ANY time period. She obviously tried to go back 120 years, didn’t work, and now she's here. Obviously!"
