If you wear contact lens, you may want to look away now.
Doctors have discovered a contact lens lodged in a woman’s year – 28 years after she lost it.
The woman, who is unnamed, lost the contact lens after getting hit in the eye during a game of badminton when she was 14.
Now, aged 42, doctors have discovered the contact lens embedded in a cyst in her left eyelid.
In a report of her case, published in BMJ Case Reports , doctors detailed how they removed the cyst, which broke up, revealing the contact lens.
Disgustingly, the contact lens was hard – and still intact.
While the woman couldn’t immediately remember how long the contact lens had been there, her mother remembered the badminton incident from 28 years ago.
In the report, the doctors said they could ‘infer that the lens migrated into the patient’s left upper eyelid at the time of trauma and [remained there] for the last 28 years.’
Amazingly, other than the cyst, the contact lens didn’t cause any other symptoms to occur.
However, we wouldn’t recommend waiting 28 years to flag any lost contact lenses!
