A former WWE star has closed down his Twitter account after he was subjected to an explosive backlash for saying he didn't want to take part in “inter-gender wrestling”.
Scott Garland, better known to fans of WWE during the Attitude Era as Scotty 2 Hotty, took to social media to ask promoters not to ask him to take part in matches against females.
Inter-gender has become popular with fans in the last few years, but Garland has chosen not to take part.

But rather than claiming he was against it altogether, he seemingly had very good reasons for not doing so.
He wrote: “Dear promoters.
“I DO NOT “fight” women.
“I'm 49 and have a 20-year-old daughter.
“'Hurting' women isn't appealing to me.
“I understand that there are men that do it these days [but] it's just not my thing.
“If that makes me old or out of touch, I'll take it.
“Please stop trying to book it.”
The comments from the former two-time WWE tag team champion – with Rikishi and Grand Master Sexay as part of the iconic 2 Cool group – were mainly well-received, but there were some who took offence to the comments.
And the backlash was something he seemingly did not want to deal with as he deleted his account a few hours later.

Russian wrestling YouTuber Xenia was one of the most vocal against Garland.
She tweeted: “So 'hurting' men in the premise of a wrestling match is totally okay, but 'hurting' a woman in the same situation is not because why?
“Because women are weak fragile flowers?
“It does make you out of touch – glad we sorted that out!”
And another wrote: “Is this not a sport?
“Do women not train and do everything the same as men wrestlers?

“Then why treat and think of them any differently?
“Take care of them as you would any of your male counterparts in the ring.”
But the backlash quickly turned to support for the man ranked as the 33rd best wrestler in the world in 2000.
One wrote: “Scotty 2 Hotty is like the nicest dude in pro-wrestling and has helped tons of women's wrestlers.
“Wrestling fandom f***ing sucks sometimes.”
And another posted: “The internet trolls made Scotty 2 Hotty deactivate just because of a perfectly reasonable take he tweeted out about his own profession.
“So much for #bekind.”
A third posted: “Y'all weird for running Scotty 2 Hotty off Twitter.
“He didn't even say anything offensive, he just expressed his opinion.”
