A raunchy message has been found etched into a Medieval ring, which was buried underground for centuries.
The gold ring was uncovered near Fritton, Essex, by a keen metal detectorist who was scanning the area for valuables. Once it was cleaned it was discovered the piece of jewellery had a phrase engraved on its outside written in Medieval French, which read: "Je desir vous Ceruir."
Historian and Essex's finds liaison officer Lori Rogerson confirmed the message, once translated, appeared to be a rather suggestive romantic declaration that said: "I desire to serve you."

Rogerson said the ring was so "tiny it only fits on my little finger," but surprisingly concluded it probably belonged to a man. "At this period rings were worn on all the joints of all the fingers, so it could have been worn on the upper joint," she said.
The X-rated jewel was found just 50m away from the site where another treasure, a gilt hooked tag, was found. The item used to fasten clothes during the Tudor period and Rogerson reckons both objects were possibly lost at the same time.

The message on the ring may appear quite raunchy for its time, with the ring believed to be dated from between 1400 and 1500. However, Medieval society wasn't as modest as many people assume, the Daily Star previously reported.
Mottos such as this one, or the similar "I wish to obey," gained popularity during this era. According to historians, kinky phrases were fashionable at the time due to a trend where men expressed desire to serve the loves in their lives.
The inscription reads in the Medieval version of French used across England by the wealthy during that time.
The man who owned the ring would’ve been a part of the elite who was able to learn, access and use the language.
