Nintendo says it has 'no plans' to release a Switch Pro despite rumors

Nintendo says it has ‘no plans’ to release a Switch Pro or another new console this year despite rumors

  • Nintendo won’t be releasing a new Switch despite rumors
  • The company’s president said there are currently ‘no plans’ to launch this year
  • It may still be developing a console that may be released in the future
  • Prior rumors suggested Nintendo was working on a faster ‘Pro’ model

Fans of the Nintendo Switch will have to wait at least a year until they get a new console according to the company’s CEO.

On Friday, Shuntaro Furukawa, Nintendo’s president and CEO said that it doesn’t have any plans to release a Pro version of its best-selling gaming console, the Nintendo Switch or any new consoles this year.

‘Regarding Nintendo Switch, we believe that it is important to continue to communicate the appeal of both Nintendo Switch systems and expand the installed base,’ said the company in a statement.

‘Please note that we have no plans to launch a new Nintendo Switch model during 2020.’

Nintendo will not release a new Switch model despite rumors that circulated last year

The official statement quiets rumors that began to circulate last year suggesting Nintendo would begin shipping a new, more powerful console by mid-2020.

Rumors began with a report from DigiTimes that claimed Nintendo’s new console would have new chips made in China and would be faster than its current Switch iteration.

While the statement from Nintendo’s president is clear, it doesn’t rule out the possibility that the company is currently working on a new console, just that if they are, it won’t be released this year.

The company has shown some willingness to expand on its Switch branding, with a new dedicated handheld called the Switch Lite.

At $200, the Switch Lite is a cheaper, and much smaller alternative to the Switch, which doubles both as a full-size console that can be played on a TV and also on a dedicated screen attached to the machine.

Nintendo has also released a improved version of its Switch – though with the same branding – that has a longer battery life over its predecessor.

As noted by The Verge, it’s possible that Nintendo may wait on releasing any new hardware this year.

Last year, the gaming giant gave the Switch its first upgrade since being released in 2017 and the Switch Lite likely preoccupied the company’s plans on hardware.
