‘Not true’: Tesla CEO Elon Musk says it would be SILLY to build a private airport in Austin for himself and top execs – but does suggest the existing airport needs another runway

• Elon Musk said Thursday that it would be ‘silly’ for him to build a new private airport in Austin for himself and top Tesla executives 
• Two of Musk’s companies, including Tesla and the Boring Company, maintain a significant presence in the Austin metropolitan area 
• Tesla is located ‘five minutes’ from Austin International Airport, the mogul said on Twitter, and suggested that the airport add another runway
• Musk uses a 2015 Gulfstream G650 but has ordered a new jet to be delivered next year

Elon Musk confirmed that he’s not planning to build an airport for himself and top executives at his companies outside of Austin – batting down the rumor on Twitter. 

In response to a tweet of a news story about the rumored new airport on Thursday, the Tesla CEO said: ‘Not true. Tesla is 5 mins from Austin International airport.’ 

‘Would be silly to build another private airport, however the existing commercial airport needs another runway, as Austin is growing fast!’ 

The story about airport was originally published by Austonia. No word yet on whether the Austin Bergstrom International Airport is planning on adding another runway to deal with the fast-growing city’s increasing air traffic.

Several of Musk’s companies, including Tesla (Giga Texas is seen above) and the Boring Company, maintain a presence in the Austin metropolitan area

Giga Texas by itself covers 2,500 acres along the Colorado River in southeast Travis County and is officially Tesla’s headquarters. 

Last year, an entity tied to leadership of the Boring Company snapped up 73 acres in northwest Bastrop, according to Austonia, and its headquarters also relocated to Pflugerville – which is a suburb of Austin located in Travis County.

The Boring Company’s address is located about three miles from the Austin Executive Airport.  

That airport has a 6,025-foot runway and over 130,000 square feet of community hangar space, reports Austonia.

Musk has tried to ramp up production in the face of multiple challenges – mostly related to supply chain chaos and the impact of inflation on the raw materials that go into the electric vehicles – so he has likely been making more trips to and from the Austin area

The SpaceX founder currently travels on a 2015 Gulfstream G650, but has reportedly ordered a new private jet set for delivery next year.

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is located about five miles from Giga Texas. 

Musk has tried to ramp up production in the face of multiple challenges – mostly related to supply chain chaos and the impact of inflation on the raw materials that go into the electric vehicles – so he has likely been making more trips to and from the Austin area. 

‘This factory is losing insane money right now,’ Musk told members of the Silicon Valley Tesla owners club in an interview at Giga Texas. ‘We should be operating a lot more cars from this factory versus a very puny amount of cars.’

‘Both Berlin and Austin factories are gigantic money furnaces right now. Okay? It’s really like a giant roaring sound, which is the sound of money on fire,’ he said.

Musk said Tesla’s Texas factory produces a ‘tiny’ number of cars because of challenges in boosting production of its new ‘4680’ batteries and as tools to make its conventional 2170 batteries are ‘stuck in port in China.’ 

Constructing a new private airport would have required approval from the Environmental Protection Agency as well as the Federal Aviation Administration.

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is located about five miles from Musk’s Giga Texas
