There have been many so-called UFO ‘sightings’ in past decades.

Some people are convinced what they saw was in fact a UFO and did not resemble anything that it could possibly be mistaken for.

So what exactly is a UFO? The term UFO stands for Unidentified Flying Objects and is used to describe an unexplained phenomenon.

It was first used in the 1950s, before this people would simply call them flying saucers, as they appeared to resemble a hovering disc-shaped object.

After the term UFO was created it was meant to be used for any unknown object spotted in the sky but has become a term used for peculiar sightings of crafts from another planet.

Some believe UFOs are flown by aliens travelling to Earth from another planet – a planet that is yet to be explored by humans.

Other speculations believe people have been abducted from the floating crafts in a mystery encounter.

Many other sightings found in relation to UFOs were from pilots who claimed to see mysterious flying objects that they had never seen before and behaved like no other aircraft.

One of the first and most well-known sightings of a UFO was in 1947, Washington.

Businessman, Kenneth Arnold claimed to see a group of nine flying objects ahead of him whilst flying his small plane.

When explaining the speed of the discs Kenneth said “like saucers skipping on water”.

After this encounter sightings began to increase with another sighting the following year and the U.S Air Force started an investigation into the mystery objects called Project Sign.

Since then reports and investigations have continued to be researched, documented and looked further into by scientists.

There have been a reported 20 sightings in London alone over the course of a year, with Scotland having a close 19 sightings and North-East England with 21 sightings, according to NetVoucherCodes.

With all these sightings of unidentified objects, it does make you wonder is there a secret life of aliens out there, visiting from another planet.

And while we wish to believe that UFOs are real, the majority of sightings are common objects such as planes, unusual clouds or a meteor or planet appearing brighter than usual.

Some people have even mistaken a UFO for a balloon in the sky.

Some cases have remained unidentified after further investigation but scientists believe they must be common objects that people simply don’t recognise.
