Conor McGregor has taken up a new diet trend called Sirtfood

It focuses on activating proteins in the body called sirtuins.

Green tea, dark chocolate, apples, kale and red wine are among the most common types of food and drink former UFC champion McGregor would be eating.

These are believed to protect cells in the body from dying under stress and meant to regulate inflammation, metabolism and the ageing process.

Having turned 30 last month, the Irishman may be keen on the latter.

McGregor posted an image of himself reading the book, written by Aidan Goggins and Glen Matten, ahead of his potential comeback to UFC.

He has not fought in martial arts for two years having traded the octagon for the ring last summer as he boxed Floyd Mayweather.

But the Irishman was beaten with a technical knockout at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas in August last year.

What is the Sirtfood diet?

Sirtuins are a type of protein that are believed to protect cells in the body from dying or becoming inflamed. They help regulate metabolism while increasing muscle and burning fat. You ARE allowed to eat dark chocolate and drink red wine, and also includes:

– Green tea

– Citrus Fruits

– Kale

– Turmeric

– Blueberries

– Parsley

McGregor is expected to return to UFC this year and could face his Russian foe Khabib Nurmagomedov for the lightweight world title at UFC 229.

He has got back into training and begins each day with an omelette and his coffee of choice, an Americano.

McGregor also eats lots of fruit with the Sirtfood diet advising to aim for plenty of citrus fruits.

He tries to avoid eating too many carbohydrates but his favourite is a sweet potato while he tucks into plenty of chicken to load up on protein.

At the recent World Cup he was seen tucking into a plate of pasta while watching the football.

McGregor does enjoy the occasional beer, though, but we may see him trade that in for red wine as advised by Goggins and Matten.

Should McGregor complete a successful comeback to UFC later this year, the Sirtfood diet will have played its role in getting the Notorious back in shape.
