Ben McAdoo planned to start Davis Webb one week too late.

The now-second-year quarterback told WFAN on Tuesday that after benching Eli Manning in favor of Geno Smith before Week 13 last season, McAdoo said Webb would play the last three weeks.

“So I was ready to rock ‘n’ roll, and I was excited,” Webb told WFAN. “But at the same time, that was a rough day because Eli’s been the best teammate I’ve ever had. So I was really hurting for him.”

That plan never came to fruition. McAdoo was unceremoniously fired after a massive backlash in the lead-up to what became a loss in Oakland, moving the Giants to 2-10.

Had he instead planned to start Webb over Smith in all four weeks, McAdoo could have justified benching Manning by pointing to youth. Instead, he started Smith, who is largely looked upon as a retread. The decision might have cost him his job.
