Lukaku is set to miss Saturday's FA Cup clash at Wolves and Belgium duty.
The 25-year-old has undergone a scan on the problem and Manchester United medics will monitor his return to action.
No return date has been set for his return but there are hopes he will be fit in time for next month’s Champions League quarter-final on April 9 or 10.
Lukaku first picked up the problem against Paris Saint-Germain when he scored two goals during United’s incredible comeback.
He needed treatment to his right ankle after a challenge from Marquinhos just before the hour mark.
The ex-Chelsea striker was able to play against Arsenal at the weekend but the injury flared up during the 2-0 defeat at the Emirates.
It is another injury for caretaker boss Solskjaer to juggle, with Alexis Sanchez, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata among his other attackers who have been crocked.
But Anthony Martial returned to the squad last weekend and is a contender to start up front at Molineux in the quarter-final clash.
Martial has been recalled to the France squad for Euro 2020 qualifiers against Moldova and Iceland after getting axed by Didier Deschamps for the World Cup.
