Spurs have opened negotiations with Manchester United for £75million-rated Toby Alderweireld.
Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho is known to have targeted the Belgium international defender as part of the defensive revamp he is planning at Old Trafford this summer.
Alderweireld is set to out of contract in 2020 and has failed to reach agreement with Tottenham over a new deal.
Next summer, he would able to leave for just £22m because of a clause in his contract — so Spurs are willing to listen to offers for him in this window when he’d command a far higher price.
It was initially believed the Londoners would accept around £55m for Alderweireld, but chairman Daniel Levy is believed to be seeking closer to the £75m Liverpool paid Southampton for fellow centre-back Virgil van Dijk in January.
Now 29, he moved to White Hart Lane from Atletico Madrid in July 2015 for £11.5m, after an impressive season on loan at Southampton.
With him starring at the back, Tottenham had the best defensive record in the Premier League in each of the next two seasons.
While injuries affected his most recent campaign, Spurs still believe they are within their rights to argue he is widely regarded as the best defender in the Premier League.
Alderweireld is one of a number of players set to leave Tottenham this summer.
Fellow Belgian Mousa Dembele, who turns 31 in July, is also set to depart.
The midfielder’s agent, Tom De Mul, has confirmed he is currently entertaining offers with just a year left on his contract.
De Mul said: “For the time being, Mousa does not sign.
“Mousa has another one year contract with Tottenham. He has played a fantastic season and there is a lot going on around him.
“There is a lot of interest inside and outside of Europe, we are waiting for the World Cup and I hope he plays in Russia, because he deserves that after such a peak season.”
