Motherland viewers can’t help but love lead character Julia, as they laugh their way through her trials and tribulations every episode as she takes on the mum eat mum world of the school playground.
Now actress Anna Maxwell Martin, who plays her, has joked that – much to her surprise – her children think she’s very similar to her frazzled alter-ego.
Anna, who was also recently on screens as Line of Duty’s DS Patricia Carmichael, laughed as she explained her daughter’s reaction to the characters she plays.
Speaking during a recent interview with Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby on ITV’s This Morning, Anna recalled a conversation with the show’s researchers which happened while her kids were in the back of the car.
She explained: “They asked, ‘who do you mother like, Julia or Patricia?’ I was like, ‘no, of course I’m not like either of those two people!”
“And then the kids obviously piped up, “yes, she’s incredibly passive aggressive, shouts a lot, she’s absolutely crackers,” Anna continued.
Continuing to joke that she didn’t know how to take what they’d said, Anna burst into fits of giggles.
She then added: “So apparently I am exactly the same as those two people in the way that I parent, which is frightening because I think the idea of [Line of Duty’s] Pat being a parent is terrifying, isn’t it?”
However, Anna said that she was thrilled to be back with series three of the hugely popular BBC Two show.
Revealing what audiences can expect as Julia and the rest of the gang return, Anna teased there were some exciting moments to come that will definitely entertain viewers.
“We did a Christmas special [of Motherland] and at the same time as that we filmed the series,” she explained. “There’s some good stuff in that this year.”
“There’s a sad reveal but there’s also an absolutely brilliant reveal, which I find really funny,” the star added.
Tonight’s opening episode kicks off as a nit pandemic sweeps the school. Of course, it’s not long before Julia finds herself accused of triggering a second wave by the other judgmental mums.
Desperately trying to get back into their good books, Julia decides to throw a nit treatment party – what could possibly go wrong?
Motherland airs on Monday night at 9pm on BBC Two
