For chocolate week, the Great British Bake Off contestants were tasked with creating a show-stopping white chocolate celebration cake. After a number of disasters in the Signature and Technical rounds, the Showstopper round would help judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood decide who would head home this week.
As usual, each contestant explained what they would be creating for their final bake of the week.
When viewers got to Linda, she broke the nation’s heart as she dedicated her English Rose cake to her late daughter, who died at the age of 18.
She explained: “This really means a lot to me this cake. It’s tribute to my daughter actually. Melissa had special needs.
“She’s no longer with us. She passed away when she was 18 but this is just a celebration of her life really and she was really just a sweet little English rose.”
Those tuning in at home took to Twitter to express their sadness over Linda’s loss.
“Thats so sad about Linda’s daughter what a lovely idea to make a celebration cake in her memory if it goes well she could be star baker this week #GBBO,” one viewer shared.
Another added: “Linda’s lovely tribute to her daughter was beautiful.
“#GBBO The pandemic has taught me just how many people live with loss, illness and hardship. I am ashamed I did not know before now.”
A third continued: “Linda just made everyone in the UK instantly brim at the eyes. Her daughter sounded truly wonderful #GBBO.”
“Oh Linda…you little darlin’ Hope she wins star baker at least tonight….but if I’m really honest, the whole thing. I am totally sold. #GBBO,” someone else tweeted.
A fifth posted: ”Linda casually breaks the nation’s collective heart and carries on baking… #GBBO.”

Fortunately for viewers, Linda’s cake impressed the judges enough to keep her in the competition for another week.
Last week, the baker paid tribute to fellow contestant Mak Patel, who was eliminated a week earlier.
The first task the bakers were given for Bread Week was to create a sweet and savoury soda loaf.
Linda knew Mak would have wanted to showcase his homemade honey, Linda decided to include the ingredient in her bake.
Commenting on her sweet gesture, one viewer tweeted: “Legit feeling a bit weepy about Linda using Mak’s honey #GBBO.”
Another added: “Linda showcasing Mak’s honey is the purest thing ever – I’m in bits #GBBO.”
“Mak left his honey for someone else to use, I weep. #AWomanSconed #GBBO,” a third posted.
Great British Bake Off airs Tuesday on Channel 4 at 8pm.
