BBC Breakfast fans baffled after Carol Kirkwood’s on-air blunder

BBC Breakfast blunder as Carol Kirkwood’s earpiece breaks

On Tuesday’s instalment of BBC Breakfast, long-standing host Carol Kirkwood teased her upcoming weather segment to presenters Jon Kay and Nina Warhurst after a short break. Although watchers were left baffled when a noticeable error appeared behind the 60-year-old who had no choice but to continue with the forecast.

Following a brief break, viewers were given a glimpse at some of the top stories the two presenters would be speaking about.

Before cutting to Jon and Nina back in the studio, Carol gave a small overview of what people can expect from the weather across the bank holiday weekend.

However, when she appeared on-screen, viewers quickly noticed she was standing in front of the wrong graphic.

Instead of the usual UK outline being displayed, the weather presenter shared the forecast with a map of Spain behind her instead.

Reading the forecast while standing in front of the wrong country, Carol said: “Good morning, it’s a cold and frosty start to the day for many of us today.

“But a fair bit of sunshine away from the north and west where we’ve got thicker cloud and some rain.

“That rain moving a little further southwards and eastwards tomorrow and then the next day.

“But, as we head into the bank holiday weekend for many, it will be settled until Easter Monday when more of us will see some rain.

“I’ll have all the details later in the programme.”

It wasn’t long before viewers watching BBC Breakfast quickly took to social media to share their confusion at the mishap.

CarlosSantana49 tweeted: “Carol discussing the UK weather with a graphic of Spain behind her ???”

Addressing the presenter directly, niggleoid questioned: “@carolkirkwood Going to Spain for your holidays? Weather map boo-boo!#BBCBreakfast”

“Does she know that’s the not the United Kingdom behind her,” a third viewer said.

While a fourth simply commented: “Oh dear.”

However, the mishap occurred following the BBC Breakfast show revealing how Spain is currently experiencing the worst drought ever on record.

Jon told viewers some areas in the country haven’t seen significant rainfall for two and a half years.

After the segment featured Guy Hedgecoe reporting from Catalonia on the issue, Carol was on hand to show a visual representation of the statistics on rainfall in Spain afterwards.

Standing in front of the country’s outline, she explained: “First of all, this chart shows how much rain has fallen compared to what we’d expect on average in the last six months.”

“In the south and also the east we’ve had 25 to 50 per cent of what we’d expect on average.

“But, look further north and west and we have more than we’d expect.”

The infographic then showed a map of Europe with the amount of rainfall expected to accumulate over the next five days with Spain having little to no rainfall.

She added: “We’ve had a dry March following on from a dry February, plus a lack of snow for example in the Alps and that means less snowmelt getting into the rivers.”

BBC Breakfast continues on BBC One from 6am.
