Black Mirror season five will be released at some point in 2019 with the streaming giant yet to share a release date. However, work on the show is nearing completion. Although Black Mirror fans have been waiting a while, they were treated to Black Mirror: Bandersnatch in December 2018. Bandersnatch was the first-ever interactive episode of the show. Here is everything you need to know about the new series including Netflix release date, cast, trailer, plot and more.

When will Black Mirror season 5 be released?

Netflix is yet to confirm an official release date for Black Mirror season five but a film could be dropping soon.

Creator Charlie Brooker teased what fans could expect after Entertainment Weekly dropped a first look image from the forthcoming series.

The image was shared on Instagram by the publication with the caption: “It’s the Marvel-DC crossover no one saw coming.” That’s how #BlackMirror series creator Charlie Brooker teases #AvengersEndgame star Anthony Mackie and #Aquaman star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s face-off in one of the new episodes from season 5 of the hit Netflix anthology drama.”

Very little is known at the moment but fans can expect a star-studded cast with some compelling stories.

Netflix confirmed Black Mirror season five was going ahead in early 2018 with Charlie Brooker now busy working on the new episodes.

Black Mirror was confirmed earlier in 2018, sending fans into meltdown. The show’s official Twitter account announced the news in typical Black Mirror style, the account shared a cryptic video and the caption: “The future will be brighter than ever.”

As the video came to an end the words: “Be Right Back” flashed onto the screen.

The caption referenced an episode in season two but also heralding the show’s return.

On top of that, Netflix announced in a release: “Patience is a virtue, but rest easy knowing there is more Black Mirror on the way.”

Creator Charlie Brooker re-tweeted the post, hinting that the show would be back soon.

The Netflix renewal shouldn’t come as a surprise given the reception from fans and critics alike when season four dropped in December 2017.

While fans wait for season five, a book called Inside Black Mirror was published in November 2018.

When will Black Mirror Bandersnatch be released?

A new Black Mirror film was released on Netflix in an entirely new section.

Before the episode dropped, there was a leak suggesting the Black Mirror special called Bandersnatch, could be hitting the platform on December 28.

Black Mirror: Bandersnatch was released on Friday, December 28 for fans to consume and re-watch as they tried to reach all the possible outcomes of the story.

Previously, a photo surfaced online in early December 2018 purporting to be a screengrab of a now-deleted tweet from the Official NX On Netflix account. The image seemed to reveal the Black Mirror season five release date and the name of the first episode of season five as Bandersnatch. We now know that this was actually a standalone event rather than part of season five.

At the time, contacted Netflix for comment on this purported leak from the NX On Netflix Twitter account, which specialises in sci-fi and fantasy content on the streaming platform.

The possible leak suggested that a Black Mirror Christmas special has been confirmed with fans set to get a festive episode this year.

One fan recently spotted that Bandersnatch was referenced way back when in season three episode Playtest.

There were also been theories that Bandersnatch could be a reference to a 1984 video game with one fan tweeting: “Turns out there was an ill-fated game named ‘Bandersnatch’ developed by a UK studio back in 1984, which is the year ‘Bandersnatch’ the Black Mirror episode takes place (we know this because a set photo shows Bob Marley’s ‘Legend’ at #1.” on the charts in a record store).

Before season five got the green light, Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones, who serve as producers on Black Mirror, talked about the possibility of a season five.

In a recent interview with the Metro they teased: “We would love to do it. We’re focusing on series four at the moment.”

The pair told that there would be a “discussion” about the future of Black Mirror once season four was released, which looks like about now.

Brooker previously admitted that there were fears Black Mirror could end after the season four finale Black Museum, which confirmed that the universe was linked.

However, season five is happening and it looks likely to air at the end of 2019, judging by the previous release dates.

Season three was released on Netflix on October 21, 2016 and the latest run dropped on the internet streaming platform on December 29, 2017.

There’s also talk of a possible spin-off from season four’s story USS Callister, which served as a twisted Star Trek parody.

Toby Haynes, who directed the episode, told The Hollywood Reporter: “I’d love to do a TV series of USS Callister – it’s probably one of the best pilots for a space show ever. And I made it! So I’m keen to see it as a TV series.

“I think Charlie [Brooker] might revisit it as a Black Mirror. Whether I’m the one to do it, I don’t know.”

He also hinted that there was an idea for the villainous Captain Daly (played by Jesse Plemons) to have survived the end of the episode and could come back.

Haynes explained: “There is this brilliant idea that he is still alive, and his attempted murder gets pinned on someone. Whose fingerprints do they find in the apartment? There’s so much you could do.”

Doctor Who and Broadchurch star Jodie Whittaker previously spoke about starring in Black Mirror, saying: “Black Mirror is its own genre. When someone gets sent a Black Mirror script now, they already know Black Mirror’s amazing but back then The Entire History of You was unlike anything I’d ever read before. I knew it was extraordinary.

Although Black Mirror season five looks like it could be some way off, a new game has been released based on Nosedive from the third outing.

According to The Verge, the game is designed for three to six players and sees people trying to tempt each other into valuable or awful lifestyles and get them to rate each other like in the story.

Who will be in the cast of Black Mirror season 5?

Black Mirror consists of standalone episodes and as such each episode has a different cast.

Previous seasons of Black Mirror have featured some big names including Hollywood star Bryce Dallas Howard, Jesse Plemons, Jon Hamm, Rupert Everett and Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker.

The series is also known for casting stars who have gone on to become big names including Daniel Kaluuya and Domhnall Gleeson.

Miley Cyrus is mostly rumoured to be joining the cast of Black Mirror season five amid emerging reports.

Although Bandersnatch was billed as a “Netflix event”, the show still feels like it’s part of season five and as such featured cast members including Fionn Whitehead, Will Poulter, Craig Parkinson and Asim Chaudhry.

Where is Black Mirror season 5 filmed?

Production has now started in Black Mirror after a set was built in Croydon, South London with Eighties-style shopfronts.

The show is filmed in various locations and Croydon is going to be just one of the many settings for the show.

Past seasons have been filmed in a range of locations, so expect a wide array of settings.

Is there a trailer for Black Mirror season 5?

There isn’t a trailer for Black Mirror season five as yet, however, there is one for Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, which you can watch below.

The trailer for Black Mirror: Bandersnatch serves as a homage to the Eighties with its soundtrack and aesthetics.

Like the most recent cycle, there is likely to be a teaser featuring snippets from all of the episodes.

Closer to the release date, Netflix is likely to drop trailers for each of the individual stories as they did with the stories for Black Mirror season four.

The individual trailers offer up more clues about each instalment of the anthology series, which is made up of standalone stories.

What will happen in Black Mirror season 5?

In a new companion book to the TV series Inside Black Mirror, Brooker and producer Annabel Jones teased details about the new series.

Creator Brooker said that it was “the usual departures from the norm”, hinting that things could be even more complex.

Jones explained: “You don’t want to look dated or reactive. There was so much debate anyway, about the political climates, that what could we possibly add?”

While Brooker went on to say: “So season five might reflect that a bit more, because it turns out that f***ing lunacy is the new norm. We just needed the dust to settle first,”

“And we’ve always managed to find ways of making [episodes] more complicated to make!”

He added: “That’s the one thing we can say about season five: we’ve definitely come up with something that’s the most complicated thing we’ve ever done.”

Story details are being kept under wraps but judging from the recent Black Mirror set that appeared in Croydon, fans can expect a retro instalment set in the Eighties.

Black Mirror season five will be more of the same: stories with a technological angle that usually have a bleak outlook.

Seasons one and two of Black Mirror proved to be quite dark, however, the third instalment proved to be more of a mixed bag in terms of tone.

Emmy Award-winning episode San Junipero was perhaps the most hopeful and uplifting story of the series as the central protagonists got a happy ending.

While season four’s USS Callister had a happy conclusion of sorts for the crew trapped inside a computer game.

Each episode will be a self-contained story, however, all episodes of Black Mirror live in a shared universe and there are subtle references between the different instalments.
