Paula Kettering (Rosie Jones) faced a devastating ordeal in tonight’s Casualty when she was forced to say goodbye to her daughter, Ena, just hours after giving birth to her.
We opened tonight’s instalment meeting Paula again, a character who’s popped up in episodes since last February.
This time, Paula was in a caravan park, heavily pregnant and in a great deal of pain.
As Paula went into labour, Dylan (Will Beck) and Jan (Di Botcher) arrived and, after a slight complication, baby Ena was born.
Paula was overjoyed to finally have her daughter in her arms, but the happiness was tinted with fear as a hospital visit was fast approaching.
Despite Paula and Dylan’s efforts, social worker Adi had already pressed fast forward on the removal of baby Ena, meaning Paula said goodbye to her daughter who wasn’t even a day old.
The ending of tonight’s episode has left us on a bit of a cliffhanger.
With Paula desperate for a drink and Dylan determined to stick by her side, viewers may be wondering if we’ll ever see the end to Paula’s story.
Fortunately, Rosie Jones revealed to Metro.co.uk that she will indeed return as this isn’t the end.
‘I have filmed more episodes. All I’ll say is, it’s not an easy and simple road. Where we leave Paula at the end of the episode, I don’t know for sure, but I think she does go back to drink, because she has to, she’s lost everything she’s been trying so hard to fight for. I think it takes an incredibly strong person to have their baby from them and carry on, we definitely leave Paula in a dark place.’
‘I think it’s important for people to know this is definitely something that disabled mums have to go through’, Rosie adds as she discusses the importance of Paula’s storyline.
‘It’s showing that just because a woman has a disability and unfortunately a problematic past, she can get better, it’s just sad that the services don’t believe it.’
Throughout this storyline, Paula and Dylan have struck up quite the friendship.
In real life, it appears the same thing is happening with Rosie and Will as she reveals what it’s like to work with this Casualty legend (yes, a legend):
‘Will is great and we’ve worked a lot together. It was great to have that opportunity to create this strong partnership. I think it was really great to show somebody in a high position who really, at times, sticks his neck on the line. I think Paula needs that, she’s never had a cheerleader and in comes Dylan. To work with Will has been brilliant.
‘We’ve now got a shorthand and we know our characters and they’re dynamic together, certainly in the later episodes me and Will were able to say a line that just shows a shorthand and a real friendship between the pair.’
