Channel 4’s latest documentary series kicked off tonight (August 2) as SAS: Who Dares Wins star (and former Special Forces soldier) Jason Fox travelled to Mexico to experience the frontlines of the drug war.
Jason spent many years trying to bring down powerful figures in the Cartel during his active duty, but now he’ll take a different approach in trying to understand what motivates Narcos to take part in such an illicit and illegal trade.
In the first part of new series Meet the Drug Lords: Inside the Real Narcos, Jason is given extraordinary access to the Sinaloa Cartel, the most formidable and dangerous drug gang of them all, as he questions members of this multi-billion dollar criminal network on their work and how they protect their operation.
“Everyone’s packing guns, everyone’s on edge,” Foxy explains at one point as he waits to be picked up and taken to the drug lords’ stronghold.
“There’s always a bit of sketchiness beforehand and then we go in, smooth it over, have a laugh… and hopefully not piss them off so we don’t get shot and buried in the middle of nowhere, never to be seen again.”
Considering the sheer amount of danger involved in the making of these episodes, the series had many praising Jason Fox as the new Ross Kemp:
Over the episode, Jason Fox explained that cartels will kill journalists who cross them to avoid negative press, while locals take it upon themselves to try and keep their streets safe from cartels and drug crime, showing footage of a street shoot-out that ended with 11 people dead.
The episode also showed Foxy interviewing one of the Sinaloa cartel’s lieutenants, as well as a former hit-man who shared details of cartel assassin training camps and assassinated more than 30 people for the cartel before turning himself into the police.
He also later visited a recent crime scene in Acapulco that saw the victim’s body having been decapitated and dismember, and throughout many viewers had no idea how Foxy managed to stay so calm during filming (and used plenty of swear words too, so fair warning):
And mostly, viewers were left both horrified and fascinated by the first episode – and they’ll definitely be tuning back in next week too:
Next week will see Jason travel to Colombia, where the narcotics industry began, and the country that remains one of the biggest traffickers of cocaine on the planet.
Meet the Drug Lords: Inside the Real Narcos continues next Thursday (August 9) at 9pm on Channel 4.
