Charlie Cox and Michael Caine skip the doors altogether in trailer for Hatton Garden heist film King of Thieves

The first full trailer for King of Thieves is here, the upcoming diamond heist movie based on one of the most daring burglaries in British history.

Homegrown legends Sir Michael Caine, Jim Broadbent, Sir Tom Courtenay, Ray Winstone, Sir Michael Gambon, Paul Whitehouse and Charlie Cox all star in the film about the notorious Hatton Garden jewellery robbery back in April 2015, which saw an elderly gang of thieves steal up to an estimated £25 million in goods.

The darkly funny trailer features Caine taking charge of the unlikely band of London robbers as they plot together, mess up and, eventually, fall out over the burglary.

Aside from the star-studded cast, King of Thieves is directed by The Theory of Everything‘s James Marsh and written by Joe Penhall, creator of Netflix’s Mindhunter.

King of Thieves isn’t the only project inspired by the Hatton Garden robbery. A four-part miniseries, Hatton Garden, starring Kenneth Cranham and Timothy Spall was due to air on ITV last December, but it’s been postponed. Last we heard it was set to premiere at some point this year.

There was also a low-budget movie released in 2017, The Hatton Garden Job, starring Larry Lamb, Matthew Goode and Joely Richardson, but it was savaged by critics as a Guy Ritchie pastiche.

Here’s hoping the bigger-budget King of Thieves is better received…

King of Thieves is released in cinemas in the UK on September 14.
