This Morning attempted to provide a Mother’s Day surprise for an elderly grandmother today – but it ended in chaos as viewers thought she looked ‘terrified’.
Jill Hatton was watching her TV with her partner John Coppack when Alison Hammond burst into the living room with chocolates, flowers and a camera crew.
When asked how she was feeling, tearful Jill said: "Just overwhelmed."
Viewers joked the elderly woman looked ‘traumatised’ as the larger than life presenter drowned her in gifts – with Jill turning away from her in one awkward moment.
Alison was practically sat on confused Jill’s lap when celebrity chef Ainsley Harriott made a dramatic entrance and waved a frying pan in her face.
One viewer said: "Oh bless her, would have been better if her kids actually made an effort to be there. Alison and Ainsley are bloody scary."
"This poor woman looks completed confused," suggest another.
A third agreed: "Jill has absolutely no idea what’s going on. Who them people in my house. Bless."
While a fourth added: "Oh my days that poor woman being surprised for mother’s day, she looks really traumatised"
However, after the initial shock Jill looked delighted and viewers praised This Morning for the lovely surprise.
One viewer said: "Jill looks absolutely thrilled
"What a lovely surprise for a lovely lady. Jill on This Morning," added another.
A third said: "Why am I tearing up watching #Thismorning poor Jill wasn’t expecting such a Mother’s Day surprise all her children abroad unable to visit her so this morning crew visited her bless Ainsley Harriet cooking in her kitchen too wow."
Emotional Jill, who suffered a stroke last year, got video messages from her two sons and daughter, who sadly could not be with her for Mother’s Day as they all live abroad.
Later on, daughter Holly Milne, who was hiding in the garden, surprised Jill as she came home from France to be with her mum.
Jill burst in tears of joy as Holly entered the dining room, but the shocked grandmother said she needed a bigger house for all the guests.
Holly said: "I was wondering if I could stay for brunch. I hear there’s a bit of a spread going on.
Praising her mum, she added: "She’s amazing, strong., always encouraged us to go for it and supported us. She’s just amazing."
Alison said: "I want you to imagine I’m your three children now as we’re going to give you a lovely day."
The first surprise was a brand new TV, which was brought into the room as a gift from her absent kids.
Jill looked shell shocked by all the commotion and could barely get any words out.
Alison then revealed the next surprise was Ainsley, who burst into the room with his frying pan and read out a long list of meals he would be cooking.
"Yes it’s a bit quiet," said Jill, who feared Ainsley was creating havoc in her kitchen.
Jill didn’t even get to eat many of her chocolates as Alison started munching on her treats.
The presenter said: "I just thought I’d help Jill out with the chocolates. She only wanted one."
Half of Jill’s wardrobe was draped on the banister as she got a makeover from the This Morning team.
Partner John said Jill looked "gorgeous" after her makeover, while emotional Jill said: "Fantastic and thank you."
