Emma (played by Alexandra Mardell) woke up at the start of Monday’s first trip to Coronation Street in high spirits as she and her boyfriend, Curtis Delamere (Sam Retford), slept together for the first time. However, by the end of the opening instalment, the young heartthrob was seen having a conversation with a mysterious young woman, leading Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) to confront his daughter’s partner. Unfortunately, he learnt some devastating news about the youngster but having had sex, could more complications be on the horizon for the lovebirds on the ITV soap as they discover they’re about to become parents?
With Emma preoccupied over the naked calendar shoot she was organising to raise funds for her late brother’s charity, Steve was furious with Curtis after spotting him with a woman in the bistro.
What he didn’t realise was the youngster had just explained he could “drop dead” at any minute and wasn’t cheating on Emma.
None the wiser, the Weatherfield stalwart told his daughter’s boyfriend to break things off with Emma before she got too invested.
The heartthrob didn’t correct him and proceeded to end things with his girlfriend as he didn’t want her to worry about his illness.
However, Danny Tomlinson (Dylan Brady) convinced the father-of-three to listen to what Curtis had to say after overhearing him talking about his diagnosis.
Coming face-to-face once more, Curtis told Steve he was living with a terminal illness and the woman he had seen him with was someone from a support group.
“Is there nothing they can do for you?” the father of three asked to which the youngster explained: “Not as (of) yet.
“It’s a heart condition. Beyond that, the doctors are baffled,” he said with uncertainty in his voice, going on to say he could drop down dead at any minute.
“How do you live with it?” Emma’s father asked, having seen his own son Oliver Battersby (Emmanuel and Jeremiah Cheetham) live with a terminal illness.
“I suppose I’m no different from anybody else in some ways. None of us knows [when we’re going to die],” Curtis added.

The youngster explained: “My heart has stopped a couple of times. In layman’s terms, I was dead.
“I’d love to say there was a bright white light and heavenly choirs but nothing. I don’t recall anything until the medics brought me back around.”
Curtis admitted he didn’t want to tell Emma or Steve because he didn’t want to burden them with his illness.
After hearing the real reason the heartthrob was acting shady, the father of three asked if Emma could be told.
Unfortunately, the youngster admitted he wanted it to be kept a secret and he would rather his girlfriend saw him as a cheat.
Having made Steve promise not to tell her, the father of three was left in an impossible situation when he called round to see Emma.
Steve could see she was desperately upset and remained with the story the heartthrob was a cheater and should not be given a second thought.
Having fallen for him, the barmaid was less than willing to accept her boyfriend had any reason for breaking her heart.
However, she could have bigger things to worry about if she discovers she is pregnant after sleeping with Curtis.
What could be more heartbreaking is if the baby inherits its father’s heart condition, leaving it with a terminal illness.
At this stage, Curtis would have to tell his partner about his illness so she can understand where the baby’s diagnosis has come from.
This would leave her heartbroken as she would have to contemplate saying goodbye to her other half and baby at any given moment.
Having discussed their future and how Curtis wasn’t cheating, the youngsters could decide to become parents regardless of what might happen.
As they get ready to welcome their child into the world, Emma could be filled with worry about how the relationship will stand the test of time.
Will she be able to put her partner and baby’s diagnosis to the back of her mind or will her relationship be ruined for good?
Taking to Twitter, viewers shared their thoughts on Curtis being diagnosed with a terminal heart condition.
One fan wrote: “I don’t get it. Curtis said he could have a normal life span. So why the need to keep his medical condition a big secret from Emma? #Corrie.”
Another added: “Curtis just needs to tell Emma the truth, she will definitely understand #Corrie.”
Whilst a third shared: “Curtis isn’t being honest with Emma, although he’s saying that’s what he wants to be! Poor Emma #Corrie.”
“Not Curtis with a life-threatening illness? Why did Corrie want to do this to such a sweet couple in Emma and Curtis? #Corrie,” a fourth commented.
Coronation Street continues Wednesday at 7:30pm on ITV.
