Former Brookside star and Coronation Street newcomer Louis Emerick has confirmed to fans that he will be leaving the soap soon after arriving in Weatherfield last month as Mike Thornberry.
The 64-year-old actor currently plays Liz McDonald’s latest love interest, an old teacher of Steve’s who took a shine to Liz, turning on the charm and flirting with her during a visit to The Rovers.
Responding to fans’ concerns on Twitter, Louis revealed that Mike won’t be sticking around as Liz’s flame for much longer. “I was only on a 3 month contract”, he wrote.
Despite agreeing with one fan who said they were “disappointed” to see Mike leave the cobbles, it seems like it’s not all bad news for Louis.
A source close to Coronation Street has told Digital Spy that the actor is yet to film his final scenes as the character and that the door will be left open when his contract ends.
Speaking to DS ahead of his arrival back in March, Louis told us that he would be in Corrie “until May.” “We’ll see what happens then”, he added. “I’ll be hanging onto the door, saying: ‘Don’t throw me out!'”
The actor’s current stint in the soap isn’t the first time he’s appeared in Weatherfield – Louis actually made his Coronation Street debut 32 years ago in a brief cameo where he helped to deliver some furniture to The Rovers after it had burned down.
Admitting that he “never thought” he’d return, he said: “I’d been up for a couple of parts before and kind of got close. But then as a fan of it you think: ‘It’s probably not going to happen now’.
“As an actor, you watch it and you see characters that maybe you could be linked with, and then somebody else comes in. I’d kind of given up the ghost of ever coming in.”
Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
