It’s official: Bullseye will appear in Daredevil season three, and series lead Charlie Cox couldn’t be more excited.
Speaking to Digital Spy, Cox – who plays Daredevil / Matt Murdock on the Netflix series – promised “a fantastic origin story” for the villain, who’s plagued the Man without Fear for years in the comic books.
“Obviously, introducing Bullseye is something they’ve been thinking about for a long time, and I’ve been wondering when, and if, that was going to happen,” he said.
“It’s a great introduction, and a fantastic origin story. He plays a pivotal role in this season. He’s manipulated by Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio). Fisk manages to very cleverly and subtly turn him into an asset of his own.
“I’m really excited for the fans to see where that goes.”
Wilson Bethel will play Benjamin ‘Dex’ Poindexter in the new season, an FBI sharp-shooter who becomes Bullseye, the super-villain with uncanny aim who can transform any object into a deadly weapon.
“It’s a fantastic character to play, because he starts off as one of the good guys,” Cox explained. “He’s an FBI agent. He’s working for the federal government. He’s a decorated sharp-shooter. He goes from that into, really, a super-villain.
“Wilson just did fantastically in that role. When you spend a bit of time with him, you see how capable he is of embodying both of those character traits, and everything in between.”
But it won’t just be Bullseye that Daredevil has to contend with in the new episodes – as Cox hinted, crime lord Wilson Fisk is back… and he’s got both DD and Matt Murdock in his sights.
“[Vincent] elevates every scene he’s in,” Cox enthused. “He elevates the show in general. He’s such an unbelievable talent, and what he’s done with the character specifically – it feels like, at the end of his career, there’ll be a good number of roles that people will remember him for, but I think this will be one of them.
“I just feel really lucky that I get to be on a show with him, particularly in this part.”
With D’Onofrio returning in a major role, after featuring in just three episodes of Daredevil‘s second season, Cox promised that the third season will delve deeper into Fisk’s dynamic with Murdock and explore how the two enemies are in fact “very, very similar”.
“These two people are cut from the same cloth… the differences between them are actually more subtle than the similarities.
“Ultimately, they want the same thing. They’re both trying to achieve the same thing in terms of protecting their city, and looking after Hell’s Kitchen. They both love the women in their life. It’s just the tactics that they employ in order to go about achieving these goals that make them so different.
“Obviously, we had that in season one, but what was particularly fun about season three is that, because we’ve already developed this relationship in season one; because they’ve already discovered the extent to which the other person is such a thorn in each other’s side – we got to start this season very high, and then take it even further.
“The level of hatred, the level of animosity that is evident, even within the first two episodes, is so great that it then just builds and builds from there. So that was really fun!”
Daredevil season 3 launches on Netflix on Friday, October 19.
