Netflix series Dark is at an end now with the story wrapped up for good. The show proved to be one of the most intense viewing experiences for audiences who dared to become immersed in the world of Winden. Nonetheless, some fans are very curious about the fate of many of the characters including Ulrich Nielsen (played by Oliver Masucci).

Is Ulrich Nielsen alive in the Origin World?

WARNING: This article contains major spoilers from Dark on Netflix

Ulrich proved to be a conflicting character from the start due to his infidelity with Hannah Kahnwald (Maja Schöne).

The pair were in a sexually charged affair despite both being married to other people with children.

To make matters worse, Ulrich’s wife Katharina Nielsen (Jördis Triebel) seemed to twig the police detective was playing away.

Therefore, when Ulrich ended up getting stuck in the past, there was little sympathy for him due to his cheating ways.

Interestingly, season three saw the introduction of the Knot – a parallel or mirror world in which things played out in a similar manner to the first dimension which viewers were familiar with from the first two series.

Once again, Ulrich was cheating in this second world although this time it seemed to be a step further.

Ulrich had divorced Katharina and was now married to Hannah with the couple expecting a baby.

But he was now having an affair with his colleague and police officer Charlotte Doppler (Karoline Eichhorn) with Hannah realising the truth.

After the Knot was destroyed by Jonas Kahnwald (Louis Hofmann) and Martha Nielsen (Lisa Vicari), all the characters within it also ceased to exist, including the two version of Ulrich.

Ulrich was never featured in the final scene of Dark but there was nothing to suggest he didn’t survive in the Origin World.

There could well have been a version of Ulrich in the Origin World after Katharina was seen attending the dinner party in the last scene.

Ulrich may not have been able to attend the party for some reason, but some version of him could be alive in Winden.

Alternatively, a version of Ulrich could also exist in another dimension – the time and space vortex Martha and Jonas travelled through alluded to the possibility of a multi-verse and so infinite worlds and versions of characters.

Martha and Jonas were confirmed to exist within this multi-verse when each saw a younger version of the other.

Also, it looks like multiple versions of Katharina could exist after she was seen calling out to a young Martha.

Going by this logic, Ulrich did survive somehow but this there was no clear confirmation either way.

The only thing which does seem likely is this: if Ulrich did exist in another world, he would probably be having an affair of some sort.

From the looks of it, Dark’s creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese have left the door open quite literally for many possibilities with the audience having to reach their own conclusions.

Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter earlier this year about season three, Friese said: “We wanted to introduce the parallel world in the second season. That was the initial plan.

“When we got to the second season, we changed it again. We thought it better to shift the puzzle pieces around.

“There were a lot of [directions] we knew we wanted to go, but didn’t necessarily know at which points in the narration we would address them.

“As you know with Dark, you don’t have the straightforward narrative where you can go from one thing to the next. We’re going back and forth.

“That was the biggest structural issue: when do we reveal what? Some of it, we knew. Some of it was something that we developed throughout the process.”
