Backstreet Boy AJ McLean has been working hard with his pro dance partner Cheryl Burke on season 29 of Dancing With the Stars. But given a choice, McLean would choose a different partner than Burke. Find out which pro dancers McLean would dance with if he could choose his partner on the show. His answers might surprise you!
AJ McLean and Cheryl Burke are more than ‘DWTS’ partners
McLean is the second Backstreet Boy to compete on Dancing With the Stars. His bandmate Nick Carter placed second with his partner Sharna Burgess during season 21 of the dance competition. McLean said he’s doing the show for his family, including his wife, Rochelle, and their two daughters, Ava and Lyric. McLean is excited to share his Dancing With the Stars experience with his kids so that they always know anything is possible.
Outside of being partners on the show, Burke and McLean have so much more in common. They are both sober now, having abused alcohol in the past. The two celebrities share their experiences with addiction on their podcast, Pretty Messed Up.
AJ McLean would choose a male pro dance partner if he was allowed
During the “What MATTers Most” episode of their podcast, McLean revealed who he would choose as his celebrity partner if given a chance to pick.
“I would say I would probably partner up with — I was either gonna say Artem [Chigvintsev] or Britt [Stewart],” McLean said. “That would be my top two, just because Britt [has a] jazz background [like me] and Artem just because that’s my Spongebob buddy right there.”
“You would have done a great tango with Artem,” Burke admitted.
“Our beards might have caught fire,” McLean joked.
Regardless of McLean’s fantasy partners, fans don’t need to worry. A curious fan submitted the question to the podcast — Burke and McLean will remain partners for the rest of the season!
Cheryl Burke would choose Justina Machado as her partner
Burke was asked the same question as McLean — if given a choice, which celebrity would she choose as her partner this season? Actor Justina Machado is Burke’s choice for one reason — Machado reminds Burke of her good friend, Leah Remini.
“Justina — she goes full out,” Burke said. “I love her.” Machado and Remini share a similar personality, according to Burke.
“I love that type of personality,” Burke added. “They don’t give a sh*t [but] when they go out there [to perform,] they give so much. And when they walk off they’re like, ‘This is bullsh*t.’ I love [Machado].”
Burke’s relationship with Remini began when she competed on Dancing With the Stars Season 17. Later, Remini stood by Burke’s side as her matron of honor in May 2019 when she married Matthew Lawrence.
While Burke and McLean both made unique choices, the truth is they’re having the time of their lives performing together.
Tune in to Dancing With the Stars Monday nights at 8PM EST to see if Team Pretty Messed Up can take home the Mirror Ball.
