EastEnders airs dramatic twist as Ruby Allen and Martin Fowler secretly marry

EastEnders dropped an almighty bombshell during Monday night's instalment as nightclub owner Ruby Allen returned from a romantic break with boyfriend Martin Fowler.

Martin and Ruby only started dating earlier this year but the pair, who have now become inseparable, have said: "I do".

The lovers left Albert Square a number of weeks ago following the arrival of Martin's ex-wife, Stacey Slater, who had been away for over a year.

During Stacey's break from the soap, she and Martin had split with the pair both finding love once more.

However, the gobby mum had hoped to rekindle her romance with the former market trader.

Stacey was left speechless after learning Martin had moved on with her best friend but she was totally unprepared for the news that was delivered on Monday.

After learning Martin and Ruby had returned from their break, she rapidly made her way over to Ruby's home to declare her true feelings for Martin and insisted that they shouldn't have broken up.

Seconds after Stacey poured her heart out, Martin revealed it was "bad timing" and that the pair should have spoken sooner.

Ruby then walked out of her home and wasted no time in sharing her happy news to a startled Stacey.

Announcing her recent nuptials, Ruby exclaimed: "You're supposed to carry me over the threshold," before offering Stacey a smirk.

After dropping the almighty bombshell, Martin confirmed to his ex that he and Ruby had married while they were away.

Stacey was left motionless as her heart shattered while her family watched on in horror.

Mum Jean and cousin Kat Slater had learnt earlier in the day via social media that the pair had tied the knot but didn't know how to tell Stacey.

Viewers instantly took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the heartbreaking scenes.

One viewer tweeted: "Ruby and Martin are married what so sad really wish Martin and Stacy had worked it out #EastEnders."

A second added: "If Martin had had an honest heart-to-heart with Stacey BEFORE he left he NEVER would have married Ruby. Since when exactly does Ruby even wanna be settled down with in the first place?"

While a third said: "#EastEnders Very surprised that Martin and Ruby are married. I wonder if she has done it to spite Stacey in any way. I've said this for a while that I don't think Martin really loves her. There is always that pull there with Stacey being the mother of Martin's kids."

EastEnders continues tonight on BBC One at 7.35pm
