EastEnders icon June Brown ‘did pelvic floors’ in BBC canteen, reveals co-star

EastEnders star Michelle Collins has revealed that her iconic late co-star  June Brown was really into “fitness" and hilariously chose an unusual place to do her pelvic floor exercises.

The legendary Dot Cotton soap actress died earlier this month at the age of 95, after retiring from EastEnders in 2020.

Michelle, 59, appeared virtually on Good Morning Britain to discuss her new play based on the board game, Cluedo, before Adil Ray took an opportunity to discuss her late co-star.

Adil asked if Michelle had any stories that she could share about June, saying: “I know you’ve got many stories, but give us a quick story you can share at 8:53 in the morning of your time working with June.”

Michelle took a pause and admitted it was “difficult” as many of the stories were not appropriate for morning TV, adding that "June was a really naughty lady".

She then gushed: “She was just really funny […] She was obsessed with fitness and people don’t really know that.”

Michelle then went on to reveal the unusual spot June chose to do her pelvic floor exercises.

“She was actually really quite healthy even though she smoked,” Michelle continued. “And she used to do her pelvic floors on the trolley in the canteen at the BBC. That’s all I’m saying.”

Kate Garraway interjected and said: “That’s incredible.”

June’s family announced the sad news of her passing in a statement which read: "We are deeply saddened to announce our beloved mother, June, passed away very peacefully at her home in Surrey on Sunday evening, with her family by her side.

"We would kindly ask that our privacy is respected at this very difficult time.”

Tributes soon flooded in from June’s co-stars, with Gillian Taylforth, who plays Kathy Beale on EastEnders, stating: "I’m truly heartbroken by this news. June Brown OBE, MBE, was an amazing woman and a truly wonderful actress.

"I shared many scenes with her over the years and she was always someone I looked up to and learnt from."

Jaqueline Jossa, who played Dot's step granddaughter Lauren Branning, posted on Instagram: "I am so heartbroken. You will be so missed. Sharing the screen with you, a family with you, was a dream come true, something I will never ever forget.

“Most of all though, your stories, your humour and just such calming words when I needed them. You made my joining the show so welcoming. I will keep these memories close to my heart. Rest in peace June."

Meanwhile, Ian Beale actor Adam Woodyatt wrote: "I’m lost for words, something June never was. So many memories, so much fun. Just purely and simply an incredible woman who had the most incredible life and career, I was fortunate to have shared a small part of it.

"They never made you a Dame (we did try), but to me you will always be Dame Brown."
