EastEnders' police blackmail story reaches shocking end with huge twist

DI Steve Thompson’s (Phillip Wright) blackmail story in EastEnders has seemingly reached a shocking end.

The bent copper has been blackmailing Callum ‘Halfway’ Highway (Tony Clay) for months, using the evidence he’s got on Ben Mitchell (Max Bowden) as leverage to get what he wants.

Thompson wants Phil (Steve McFadden) behind bars, and he believed that Callum’s connection to the Mitchell clan would ultimately grant him his wish.

Therefore, he’s been having PC Highway plant bugs, wear wires and secure any evidence he can on the Mitchell hard-man.

Callum was struggling under the pressure, and therefore sought out Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) on New Year’s Day — hoping he could help.

Jack was going to report Thompson, but he ultimately devised another plan, as he decided to kill two birds with one stone.

He managed to persuade the bent copper to leave Callum alone, in exchange for promising to get Phil put behind bars.

Thompson seemingly agreed to Jack’s terms, and therefore handed over the evidence he’d already secured on Phil.

With Callum by his side, Jack then confronted Phil and Ben, telling them a slightly altered version of events — one in which Callum, after being blackmailed, sought help from Jack immediately.

The Mitchells seemingly bought the lie, but Jack then proceeded to use the evidence on Thompson’s USB in an effort to persuade Phil to stay away from Denise Fox (Diane Parish) and Raymond.

Is Callum off the hook?
