EastEnders actress, Nina Wadia, who played Zainab Masood on the BBC One soap has spoken out about returning. The Masood matriarch was seen between 2007 and 2013, exiting because of her marital breakdown with her husband Masood Ahmed (Nitin Ganatra). But following an eight-year absence, could Zainab make a return to Walford? Nina recently confessed she’s been asked to make a comeback before and knows she’ll rejoin the show sometime “in the future”. Could this coincide with her hearing about her son, Tamwar Masood’s (Himesh Patel), divorce to Nancy Carter (Maddie Hill)?
Nina told Inside Soap: “I know I’ll step back into the Square in the future.
“I’ve been asked back a couple of times but the timing wasn’t right. It has to be a joint decision between EastEnders and me.”
The actress’ comments follow her previously discussing the time she was asked to return in 2016, but turned it down.
Back then, she explained: “They [BBC bosses] did [ask me back] last year, actually they did.
“But I was doing a pilot out in the States and I said I couldn’t do it, I’m still waiting to hear on that [pilot].”
So, what storyline would Zainab be involved in should she return to EastEnders?
Earlier this year, Nancy arrived at the Queen Vic with some bad news; she and Zainab’s son, Tamwar, were getting a divorce.
In a scene which aired earlier this month, Nancy told her mother, Linda Carter (Kellie Bright): “When we got married I genuinely thought we would stay together forever, I thought only idiots got divorced – but maybe I’m an idiot.
“I was never going to be enough for him, I don’t know, I didn’t realise we wouldn’t make it if we didn’t have kids.”
“It’s a hard thing to get your head around, you know I struggle with it,” Linda said in reference to Nancy’s wish to be sterilised.
“Yes, but he’s my husband – he was my husband,” Nancy continued. “I want him to support the no matter what I’m feeling, I know dad would support you.”
It seems Nancy still feels torn between wanting to be with Tamwar but not wanting to become a mother.
Zainab is extremely family-focused, and considering her own marriage breakdown, could she try and fix Tamwar’s relationship with Nancy?
And fans would love to see Zainab return, taking to Twitter to comment, one said: “Yes I’d love Zainab and Masood return @bbceastenders #Eastenders.”
“I would so love for Zainab Masood to return. I miss her bickering and arguing with Ian. She’ll be such a brilliant match for Suki. I can see them being frenemies. #EastEnders,” another said.
Someone else tweeted: “Fingers crossed that Nancy’s return leads to a Tamwar return and then the revival of the Masood family! Masood, Zainab, Shabnam, Syed, Christian… I would faint #EastEnders @bbceastenders.”
Zainab’s return could also see a new rivalry form between herself and Suki Panesar (Balvinder Sopal) as one fan mentioned above.
Suki is currently the leading matriarch in Walford but Zainab could give her a run for her money should she return.
In recent scenes of EastEnders, Suki has been left a broken woman after son, Jags’ (Amar Adatia) death.
He was sent to prison last year after being set up for a robbery he didn’t commit.
A fellow inmate killed him last month, and the family have been struggling to come to terms with the news
The grief has consumed her, so much so, she has stopped eating as a way of punishing herself.
But it’s not just Suki who is suffering, as the whole family is set to experience a “change” which “impacts their relationships with each other and other characters”.
EastEnders returns tonight at 8pm on BBC One.
