MITCH Baker is worried about his daughter Bailey in EastEnders next week when he doesn’t hear from the little girl.
Fans of the BBC One soap know that nine-year-old Bailey is a young carer for her seriously unwell mother, Dinah.
When Mitch – Roger Griffiths – tells his teenage son Keegan that he’s concerned about Bailey’s wellbeing, Keegan offers to check in on her.
Mitch is grateful for his offer and Keegan heads to the flat where Bailey and Dinah live.
But Keegan – played by Zack Morris – is shocked when he sees how much Dinah’s condition has deteriorated and how frail she is.
He tries to comfort a scared Bailey, reassuring her that going into a care home is the best thing for both her and Dinah.
But what will this mean for Bailey?
EastEnders fans have praised the show for tackling the subject of young carers.
Taking to Twitter, many viewers have expressed how Bailey’s story mirrors their own experiences of looking after a sick parent.
One watcher wrote: “I feel so sorry for Bailey, I know how she feels 100% as I’m a carer for my mum and have been for as long as I can remember. It’s great how they are doing a young carer storyline.”
Another said: “fully love EastEnders for doing a young carer storyline!!! So many people have a blatant disregard for young carers and expect them to carry on like a 'normal child'.
While a third tweeted: “Eastenders doing a Young carers story makes me so happy! I was a young carer from the age of 14 until i was 18 and I know the hardships! Bailey caring for her mum is so beautiful.”
It’s not been made clear exactly what’s wrong with Dinah, but Mitch recently revealed to Karen Taylor – mother of his children Keegan and Chantelle – that she was dying.
