It’s finally time! After 11 months, the hit CW series Jane the Virgin is returning for its fifth (and final) season. The remaining 19 episodes will close out the story of Jane Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez), a young woman who never had sex when she was accidentally artificially inseminated. The past four seasons of the show have delighted critics and audiences alike, but now its time to say goodbye. There have been a lot of ups and downs in Jane’s love life. At the start of the series, she’s dating police officer Michael Cordero, who plans to propose to her on the very day she learns she’s pregnant. Michael and Jane breakup after she begins to have feelings for Rafael, who is the father of her baby. However, she and Michael eventually get back together, and they get married in the Season 2 finale.
But marriage is never perfect. In a sudden twist of events, Michael dies from complications from a past wound. The show fast-forwards a few years, and Jane begins to date again. After breaking up with her ex, Adam, Jane and Rafael’s feelings finally line up, and they decide to move in together. Then, the final shot of Season 4 reveals that Michael is actually alive, and now Jane has a difficult decision to make.
Petra murdered her sister and has now witnessed another crime
Things have never been above board when it comes to Petra Solano, Rafael’s ex-wife. She lied to get him to marry her, she cheated on him, she made deals concerning shares of their hotel, The Marbella — and that’s just in the first season. Though we’ve seen Petra grow as a person, especially after she becomes a mother to twins Anna and Ellie, she still manages to get herself caught up in a lot of trouble, and Season 4 was no different.
It’s revealed in the Season 4 finale that Petra did kill her identical twin sister Anezka, a crime she’s been working with her lawyer-turned-lover, Jane Ramos, to cover up all season. The only problem is that J.R., as she’s known, believed she was innocent the whole time and sacrificed her career for Petra. They break up, but J.R. learns that someone is out to get Petra, and manages to save her just in time — shooting someone else in the process. We’ll likely find out who in the premiere.
Jane’s family has their own drama, but things are pretty good right now
The rest of the main cast consists of Jane’s family: Her mother Xiomara, father Rogelio, and grandmother Alba. They’ve all had their own host of telenovela-esque drama in the past: Everything from kidnapping to parentage secrets to deportation scares. But right now, things are going reasonably well for the rest of the Villanueva-De La Vega crew.
Rogelio and Xiomara struggled with his new baby (Baby) and her cancer, but are in therapy now and doing well. Alba is now a U.S. citizen, and though she and her ex, Jorge, are just friends now, they got married so that he can use her citizenship to travel outside the U.S. to visit his dying mother. Of course, they’re all about to get caught up in Jane’s drama. Which, as the narrator would say, it where we left off.
