Gogglebox’s Giles Wood ‘retired at 21’ and earns decent living from second job

Gogglebox fans may not know that Giles Wood has another job up his sleeve that he seems to keep on the down low.

The Channel 4 star shot to fame in 2015 after he appeared next to his wife of more than 30 years Mary Killen, on the telly watching programme.

They quickly became one of the many popular couples of the series and are most loved for their adorable wit and sweet nickname of "Nutty" for each other.

It is common knowledge that Mary is a successful author and has written a number of books such as How The Queen Can Make You Happy in 2012.

As a talented writer, she also has her own column as the Spectator's beloved agony aunt.

When it comes to husband Giles, many Gogglebox goers may have believed that TV icon has been somewhat retired for many years – especially from many of Mary's jibes about his work ethic on the show.

On a previous episode, Mary and Giles were watching a documentary about Covid-19 when he turned to his wife and commented: "Just as I'm starting to enjoy my retirement."

Rolling her eyes, Mary struck back: "What retirement? You haven't worked first.

"You retired at 21, so now you can start working – do it in reverse."

Giles, much like his wife is also a talented writer and often contributes to the online magazine The Oldie.

However, his passion has always been painting which is how the now married couple had met in the first place – when Mary was a model and Giles just 21 was busy studying at Wimbledon Art School.

Following his heart, Giles has his own website where he flogs his own paintings – with some fetching the hefty sum of £250 with a frame included in the price.

With a keen eye for detail, the TV star explained on the site: "I like the contemplative aspect — sitting for several days in a room, watching the light change.

"There are as many changes as with a landscape. I always work in oils as they give more depth. The finished painting should offer an insight into the painter as well as the subject."

Gogglebox airs Fridays on Channel 4 at 9pm
