We just managed to get the mound of flour singing ‘We All Stand Together’ out of our nightmares, and now The Great British Bake Off has brought back those creepy singing cakes for a first-look teaser at the 2018 series.
A sneak peek at the ninth series was unveiled on Thursday (August 2), featuring bunny-shaped cupcakes, wincing Yorkshire puddings and gobby scones creepily singing along to Christina Aguilera’s ‘Beautiful’.
If you’re like us — and a huge chunk of people, apparently — you’ll not be able to shake the eerie similarities to last year’s trailer, which was dubbed “disturbing” by some for having cakes singing along to Paul McCartney and the Frog Chorus.
This year’s ad culminates in a singing layer cake doing a vocal solo as it’s delivered to Noel Fielding, Sandi Toksvig, Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith in the tent — with the scene cutting out before the on-air team presumably devour this helpless, sentient baked good.
Enjoy those nightmares tonight, people!
The baking competition will be back in the coming months on Channel 4 for its second year running, after making the jump from BBC One following lots of hype.
Co-presenter Noel Fielding has said that both himself and Sandi Toksvig have felt more comfortable filming this series, since they weren’t completely panned by fans even after taking over for the beloved Mel and Sue.
“Last year we were under an enormous amount of pressure to not ruin this sacred show that everyone loved, so we weren’t as worried about the bakers, we were just trying to make sure we didn’t destroy our own careers,” he recently admitted.
“We were like, let’s get in, and if it doesn’t work, we’ll set fire to the tent and leg it.”
Luckily, all turned out relatively well — at least until Prue spoiled the finale result on Twitter!
The Great British Bake Off will return to Channel 4 later this year.
