This Morning dedicated Wednesday’s instalment to all things spiders, with facts about the much-feared creatures revealed throughout the show. Spider experts brought in a few of the insects and despite reassuring Holly Willoughby that spiders are “good”, she was terrified when Phillip Schofield pretended one had got out and leapt from her chair.

One of the experts on the show who was holding a tarantula explained how spiders kill other bugs which pose more of an inconvenience to humans.

“When you think about mosquitoes and the damage they can do to the human race, things like that,” he remarked.

“And these guys – I think there was one statistic that spiders and bats, they kill like a tonne of insects per night

“So that’s a tonne of insects that don’t eat us,” he went on and still eyeing the huge spider, Holly agreed.

“Yeah, that’s a very good point, isn’t it?” she commented. “And he looks very calm.”

“Oh, she’s lovely,” he explained as Holly stated: “Oh she, sorry, does she have a name?”

“Males are short-lived compared to females,” the expert continued.

Holly asked: “Oh really? And does she have a name?” To which the spider lover replied: “Yeah, I call her Rosie.”

“Rosie!” the presenter smiled. “See, they’re much friendlier when they’ve got names.”

She advised viewers: “I think name them, that’s the first thing you should do when you see one, then it doesn’t seem so scary.”

Turning to the guests and their fans, she added: “Thank you!”

“Thank you both,” Phillip remarked, before suddenly asking: “Oh, how did that one get out?”

Holly immediately shot up, walking away from the sofa.

Bursting out laughing, Phillip stated: “It’s too easy, it’s too easy!”

Trying to move on from the awkward moment, Holly glared at the camera and continued: “Competition time now, and Josie is here with us all morning for a big autumn giveaway of £75,000.”

Still chuckling, Phillip added: “I’m amazed you didn’t swear.” Holly admitted: “Well, it was very close!”
