The best celebrity nicknames often come by way of Hollywood couples. From Brangelina and Kimye to Bennifer and Hiddleswift, the easiest way to remember who is dating who in Hollywood is to give them a memorable nickname. For a lucky few, however, a catchy nickname comes without the relationship.
Rihanna’s trusty navy has nicknamed the R&B singer RiRi. Beyoncé’s Beyhive gets the luxury of calling their fave the Queen B, Bey, Yoncé, or even Mrs. Carter. Jennifer Lopez’s name got famously shortened to JLo. Christina Aguilera got the Xtina treatment, and even Justin Bieber gets called the Biebs from time to time.
Celebrity nicknames are something of a right of passage, but one actress isn’t too fond of her nickname. Avengers star Scarlett Johansson has repeatedly expressed her disdain for her celebrity nickname, ScarJo. One reason could be that unlike many of our celebrity faves, Johansson’s stage name is actually her birth name. Still, why is the actress so offended by the shortened, catchy version?
Scarlett Johansson calls her nickname "awful"
Scarlett Johansson has been adamant about her feelings towards her Hollywood nickname. Largely started by media outlets and carried on by fans, the JoJo Rabbit star is commonly referred to as ScarJo, a nickname Johansson herself wishes would stop.
In 2011, the actress called the nickname “awful” in an interview with USA Today (via Huffpost). “It’s a laziness…People can’t actually say the whole name? It’s just bizarre … so Cate Blanchett is not, like, ‘CaBla’? Why is that? Why do I have to get stuck with [ScarJo]?” said the actress.
Johansson ranted again about the nickname in an interview with Glamour in 2014, saying “I associate that name with, like, pop stars. It sounds tacky. It’s lazy and flippant. And there’s something kind of violent about it. There’s something insulting about it.”
To be fair, some of the most memorable celebrity nicknames are for musicians, but ScarJo has to be better than simply being called “that girl from that movie”…right?
