The Sky series, which is also available to stream on NOW, looks at Janet Jackson’s personal life as the singer shares private details about her relationships and career. During the first instalment of the programme titled Janet Jackson Baby Sister, the pop star got emotional as she discussed what her marriage to James Debarge was like.
The 55-year-old went on to admit that she would often be late for work because her relationship with James was more important.
“I would wait for James to pick me up, and I mean to wait two and a half hours late,” the singer began.
“And I eventually learned that he was into drugs.”
As the programme played a clip of Janet and James together, the All For You hitmaker continued: “There were a lot of nights where I would go searching the streets looking for him.”
She continued: “I remember times where I would find the pills and take them and try to flush them down the toilet.
“We were rolling around on the floor fighting for them. That is not a life for anyone.
“I sit and I say, ‘Are you stupid? Are you dumb?’ It wasn’t that, I cared so much for him.
“I saw the good in him as well. I just wanted that to take precedence as opposed to the ugliness.”
“I knew that he needed help,” Janet emotionally added. “But I wasn’t the help that he needed.”
The singer went on to add that she finally plucked up the courage to get an annulment from James as their marriage only lasted a year.
“One day he wanted me to drive him to his brother’s house,” she recalled.
“And that’s when I told him and he was so mad and so frustrated. And when he got out of the car I locked the doors.”
“I remember driving back home to my parent’s house and I was just done,” Janet admitted.
“I was just incredibly innocent. That’s the thing, innocence.
“And it’s just hurtful for somebody to see that and try to take advantage of it.
“And knowing you don’t know any better and lying to you.”
As Janet broke down in tears, the topic seemed to get too much for her as she refused to talk further about it.
“I don’t want to talk about this anymore,” she said through tears.
“It doesn’t matter how much work you do, it is still painful.”
Janet has been married three times in her life, with her first marriage being in 1984. The singer was just 18 when she eloped with James.
Janet is available to stream on NOW in the UK now.
