Congrats! The original team from “Crazy Rich Asians” plans to return for a sequel — and probably another film after that, to complete the trilogy. The Hollywood Reporter shared the sequel scoop, adding that Warner Bros. hadn’t *officially* greenlit a second movie — it’s only been a week since “Crazy Rich Asians” opened, it usually takes longer for an official stamp — but the studio is moving forward on development.
“Crazy Rich Asians” was adapted from the novel by Kevin Kwan. It spawned two more novels, “China Rich Girlfriend”and “Rich People Problems.” Warner Bros. has the options for Kwan’s entire trilogy. “We have a plan with Kevin for the next two films,” producer Brad Simpsons told THR.
The first romantic comedy adaptation, directed by Jon M. Chu, had a strong opening weekend at the box office, ultimately picking up about $35.3 million after five days.
The film’s end credits left the door open for a sequel, and fans (including many celebrities) hoped it would indeed happen. Harry Shum Jr. (“Glee”) fans are particularly pleased, since this heavily hints to a bigger role for his character Charlie in the second film along with Gemma Chan’s Astrid.
According to THR, screenwriters Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim are expected to return, along with “Crazy Rich Asians” producers Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, and John Penotti.
Sources told THR that Chu would likely return to direct the sequel, even though he has a busy schedule filming Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “In the Heights.”Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook.
