Line of Duty season 5 spoilers: Ted Hastings unveiled as John Corbett’s father?

WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Line of Duty season five episode six.

Superintendent Ted Hastings (played by Adrian Dunbar) was being investigated by DCS Patricia Carmichael (Anna Maxwell Martin) over suspicions of corruption on Line of Duty.

During the questioning on the BBC drama, it was unveiled that Ted was close to John Corbett’s (Stephen Graham) mother Anne Marie who had been murdered.

Gill Biggeloe (Polly Walker) managed to convince Corbett that Hastings was the one responsible for the death and he was recruited as an undercover officer in an organised crime group.

I reckon John Corbett was the love child of Hastings and Anne Marie

The conversation between Gill and Corbett had been recorded and it was played aloud in the interview.

Ted was clearly overcome with emotion as he asked for a moment alone, only to break down in tears.

It was during the interview that he learnt for the first time that Corbett was Anne Marie’s son.

Could Ted and Corbett have a secret family connection to explain why Ted was so emotional?

As viewers will know, Corbett was killed earlier in the series as the OCG murdered him.

Last night’s episode saw him visit the cemetery where Corbett was buried, and he also gave £50,0000 to his widow.

Many fans suspect Ted is Corbett’s father and have taken to Twitter to speculate.

“Ted Hastings = John Corbett’s Dad #justaguess #LineOfDuty,” one fan theorised.

A second added: “So I reckon John Corbett was the love child of Hastings and Anne Marie… #LineOfDuty.”

“I think Ted is Corbett’s Dad & that’s why he was devastated when he found out he was Anne-Marie’s son & why he has given £50k to his widow #LineOfDutytheories #LineofDuty #LINEOFDUTY5 #LOD,” a third shared.

While a fourth questioned: “Corbett was Ted’s son right? Hence the 50k at the end? #LineOfDuty.”

It’s good news for fans of the gripping series as another season of the programme has already been lined up.

The news was announced in 2017 that two more seasons had been commissioned with series five being part of that deal.

The BBC director-general Tony Hall said back in 2017: “I am very excited to say there’s not one but two more series of Line of Duty. So hooray for AC-12!“

There were two years between the airing of series four and five, so viewers may have to be patient.

Line of Duty is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
