Love Island drops first bombshell of the series with explosive line-up twist

Love Island: Kai and Sanam announced as winners

Love Island is returning to ITV for its summer edition and the official line-up has now been confirmed.

From football stars to influencers, there will definitely be some characters descending on the villa this year.

Usually, the singletons pick their personal favourite from the line-up to be coupled up with.

However, this year it will be down to the public to decide which Islanders couple up in the opening episode.

Voting opens on Thursday, June 1 at 8am and viewers can vote for free via the Love Island App.

However, the voting window is short, with votes closing on Friday evening at 9pm.

Iain Stirling, who narrates the series, spoke about the twist during his appearance on Lorraine last year.

He explained: “We want you guys at home to play cupid and you will have your say on which boy couples up with which girl.”

Host Maya Jama appeared on Good Morning Britain this week to announce the “very big surprise”.

She explained how the public has all the power, adding: “For the first episode, you guys are going to decide who couples up. You vote and we listen.”

With the contestants unable to choose for themselves, will they be happy with their new partners or will there be doubts?

The full list of contestants this year includes Ruchee Gurung, a 24-year-old beautician and Tyrique Hyde, a 24-year-old semi-professional footballer.

Ahead of entering the villa he said: “I’ll bring vibes, confidence, good energy and honesty. I don’t sit on the fence, if I have an opinion I will speak up. I’m also not afraid to go after what I want.”

If he is not matched with someone who catches his eye, there could be trouble ahead.

Fellow contestant George Fensom shared his preferences, saying: “I prefer a girl who is naturally good looking and someone who has even more banter than me- although I don’t believe that’s physically possible.”

The contestants are in for a surprise when their new partners are announced during the first show.

Love Island starts on Monday, June 5 at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX
