Mariah Carey arrives in Emmerdale in time for Christmas – kind of

Mariah Carey gets everywhere this time of year, even in little old Emmerdale, but it’s not festive cheer she’s spreading, it’s voice wars.

Charles (Charles Mathurin) has a huge job on his hands, he needs to flesh out the choir in time for Christmas but it’s no task for the faint hearted.

Recruitment is nigh on impossible and trying to pull in the youngsters is proving the hardest bit.

Ethan (Emile John) can see the issue and advises his dad to bring the choir into the 21st century which gets Charles thinking on ideas, and he concocts a plan.

Charles immediately knows who to aim for – Cathy (Gabrielle Dowling) and April (Amelia Flanagan) are prime targets to be the faces of the new choir.

He spots them in the café and prepares to put on his best salesman spiel to get them to audition, but unbeknownst to him, there’s still friction between the teens about the boy dilemma.

This plays into Charles’ hands in a way he doesn’t expect as the suggestion that they are pitted against each other in a competition is music to their ears. But it means there is now a war afoot. Charles has created a monster.

As the auditions come around the competition is fierce and Charles is wowed by how much it’s exceeded his expectations, especially when his own son wows the crowd.

Mariah Carey makes her appearance when Ethan takes centre stage and belts out the Christmas classic, leaving jaws on the floor and spiking anxiety levels of his fellow auditionees.

Cathy for one is left terrified by his performance realising she’s out of her depth.

It’s her time to shine and she gets up on stage, but she chokes. She spirals into full breakdown mode and April is forced to watch on as her pal crumbles in front of everyone. Will she use this to her advantage to score herself a spot in the choir?
