Line of Duty fans have been left speculating over whether series six could mark the end of the hit BBC One drama.
And now the stars of the show have spoken out, with Martin Compston saying they’ll only come back for series seven “if there’s a story to tell.”
In an interview that will air in Saturday's episode of ITV’s The Jonathan Ross Show, Martin and his co-star Vicky McClure said that while they’re in the dark about whether there will be more, the cast won’t come back just for the sake of it.
As Jonathan quizzes the duo, who play AC-12 favourites Steve Arnott and Kate Fleming, about fan theories and the show’s huge popularity, he asks whether fans can expect more addictive action in the future.
Vicky answers: “Genuinely don’t [know]. We don’t know anything, not just saying it for effect.”
While Martin adds: “That’s nothing different for us. Jed [Mercurio, the show’s creator and writer] always takes months after… there’s stuff above our pay grade, analytics, figures and all that kind of thing that comes in.”
“He always takes time off. But I think it is important to say, I think this natural story arc that we’ve been on for the last six years…”
As Jonathan chimed in that it appeared the plot line was wrapping up and coming to an end, Martin continued: “We won’t come back just for the sake of it. That’s for sure.”
“We’ll come back if there’s a story to tell. But, so as well, if it ends well maybe sometimes it is best to leave it. But, so, genuinely we don’t know.”
Elsewhere in the chat, firm friends Martin and Vicky opened up about the huge following that the show has attracted since it debuted in 2012.
Agreeing that their diehard fans are the best in the business and that it’s taken them by total surprise, Vicky says: “It’s surreal, it’s just gone insane; the art, the creativity, the videos. We’re just blessed [by the fans].”
Martin continues: “Every year you worry, are we still relevant? Are people still going to be invested?”
“Now we’re bigger than ever, getting new fans… it’s an intense period when it’s on. Yeah man, the reactions have just been great. All these wild theories… some are pretty close!” he teases.
Martin also opens up about the social media messages the cast receives, as he laughs: “The Instagram DMs get a bit out of hand. A lot of marriage proposals and a lot of proposals of other stuff from both sexes I must say.”
The Jonathan Ross Show airs on Saturday 1 May at 9.35pm on ITV and ITV Hub. The Line of Duty finale airs on Sunday 2 May at 9pm on BBC One.
