The singer says her original statement “got a little bit skewed with” after making it.
Mel B is on rumor control, appearing on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" to clarify reports that came out about her over the weekend.
With Lea Michele acting as guest host leading up to the new season of Ellen’s daytime talk show, the Spice Girl addressed her announcement that she’ll be entering a treatment program for PTSD. After confirming the news to The Sun on Sunday, other outlets ran with the headline that she would also be treated for sex and alcohol addiction, something she wanted to shut down.
"Well, it kind of got a little bit skewed with. Let’s put it that way," the "America’s Got Talent" judge said of reaction to the news.
Explaining that she has been in therapy since her father was diagnosed with cancer nine years ago, she added that her therapy "changed a little bit because I was in a very intense relationship." That, of course, is a reference to her volatile split from Stephen Belafonte. She alleged he was physically and emotionally abusive, even forcing her to have sex with other women. Belafonte has denied those allegations, while he accused Mel B of being addicted to drugs and alcohol.
Promoting her upcoming book, "Brutally Honest," she said she’ll "address a lot of those issues" in the memoir in more detail. For now, she just wanted to tell everyone, "No, I’m not an alcoholic. No, I’m not a sex addict."
"You know, I was with the same person for 10 years and that was quite a turmoil, very intense," she said. "That’s all I can say about it. I’d like to say a lot more, but let’s just keep it PC. But ya, I address a lot of those issues and I did kind of have to ease my pain."
"I am fully aware I am at a crisis point," she admitted in a lengthy statement on Sunday. "No-one knows myself better than I do. But I am dealing with it."
"I am being very honest in my book about drinking to numb my pain but that is just a way a lot of people mask what is really going on," she continues. "Sometimes it is too hard to cope with all the emotions I feel. But the problem has never been about sex or alcohol — it is underneath all that."
Mel’s full interview will air Wednesday, August 29.
