Neighbours star April Rose Pengilly reveals she also wanted "slut-shaming" scene changed

A second Neighbours has said that she pushed for changes to a recent scene that original featured Dipi Rebecchi “slut-shaming” Chloe Brennan.

The recent scene featured Dipi (Sharon Johal) lashing out when she assumed that Chloe (April Rose Pengilly) was having a sexual fling with her husband Shane. In actuality, Chloe was earning extra cash for going on paid dates with men but there was no hanky panky.

In response to the scene airing, Sharon Johal revealed on Instagram that was she strongly opposed to the original script and pushed for some key changes which shifted the blame to Shane rather than Chloe.

“I hated doing this scene,” she wrote on Instagram. “Not only because I had to be mean to my friend April Rose Pengilly but because it was originally written to shame Chloe for her choices which I am personally against (and believe Dipi is too) so I changed the dialogue as much as I was allowed.”

Now, April Rose Pengilly (aka Chloe) has shared on Instagram that she too was involved in re-shaping the scene so it wouldn’t be leaning on outdated tropes.

“We both went to great lengths to change this scene,” she wrote. “It was written as a classic cat fight, in which Chloe was basically slut-shamed.

“It wasn’t a great message and didn’t make sense for our characters. So, we workshopped it a little bit!”

She added: “We felt it was inappropriate for Dipi to blame Chloe solely, saying nothing to her husband (who she believed had made the choice to cheat on her).”

Pengilly also admitted that being shoved into the trash at the climax of the scene wasn’t much fun, joking: “It took me so many tries to break the chip-board with my butt!”

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 5.30pm on Channel 5.
