Streaming giant Netflix has confirmed that, contrary to what you may have seen on Reddit, their test adverts are skippable and temporary.
We get it, ads can seem like an intrusion on your personal space sometimes, but Netflix’s offerings are at least cleverly personalised. According to a spokesperson (via IGN), the ad test only affects a small corner of its users.
They shared: “At Netflix, we conduct hundreds of tests every year so we can better understand what helps members more easily find something great to watch.
“A couple of years ago, we introduced video previews to the TV experience, because we saw that it significantly cut the time members spend browsing and helped them find something they would enjoy watching even faster.
“In this particular case, we are testing whether surfacing recommendations between episodes helps members discover stories they will enjoy faster.”
Streaming service browsing is a double-edged sword, it can be fantastically illuminating to discover gems tucked away in obscure categories – but the time you spend in doing so can waste half your evening.
Netflix’s ambition is to decrease that time spent flicking through irrelevant titles, and the beauty of it is you can also choose to skip their help, jumping straight back into your favourite show.
Meanwhile, there’s been a whole batch of fresh material added to the platform this month, including Matt Groening’s medieval animation Disenchantment, Gotham season 4 and the beginning of Better Call Saul‘s fourth outing.
