Warning! This article contains MAJOR spoilers for season six of Orange Is the New Black. Proceed with caution.
If you’ve already sped through season six of Orange Is the New Black and are now wondering where the hell the characters can go from here, you’re not alone.
While some appear to be facing a long and difficult road ahead, there are others whose futures look a lot more clear-cut – and in the case of one, a lot more clear-cut than expected.
You’d be forgiven for thinking Piper Chapman would be a shoo-in for the dramedy’s final season, but the big reveal of season six’s finale has changed everything for the show’s protagonist.
(Or antagonist, let’s face it.)
Taylor Schilling has been talking to The Hollywood Reporter about Piper’s bittersweet release from prison, hinting that – against all the odds – her story might be coming to a close a lot sooner than fans expected.
“It certainly is an end of an era,” Taylor said of the latest season. “Orange has been such a huge chapter in my life, personally and professionally.
“I’m so grateful to have been able to play this part of Piper. I’m excited to let Piper go and put her to rest beautifully, as I’m sure [creator Jenji Kohan] will do, and let her kind of live on in her own world, when that time comes.”
The actress went on to admit that she’s “always” been “sort of ready for the end” but is now properly ready to let Piper, and the show itself, go.
“I have all the feelings,” she admitted. “I’m very excited for what comes next.”
Teasing further that season seven might conclude Piper’s story even if the show itself continues, Taylor said that as an actor, she is “getting ready to say goodbye to a role”, before adding: “It’s very poignant.”
Orange Is the New Black season 6 is available to watch on Netflix now.
