Two stories have been in the headlines lately: Megxit and Patrick Stewart’s return to the role of Jean-Luc Picard in the show Star Trek: Picard. Stewart has a lot to say about Prince Harry, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. Here’s why he thinks they’d be perfect for his show.
Why Patrick Stewart thinks Prince Harry and Meghan Markle would be perfect for ‘Star Trek’
According to CBS, someone asked Stewart if he was following Megxit on an episode of CBS This Morning. He said “Following it? I’m very much involved in it, actually, because people don’t know what lies behind this thing that has been happening and I happen to.”
Stewart added “The fact is, we’ve made them an offer to appear on Star Trek: Picard and they have roles to play.” He was joking, however he does think the couple would be great on the show. “That would be perfect for us because Meghan, we know she’s an actress, and Harry, I have no doubt has got all the talent and ability he needs.”
Stewart said Prince Harry is the right age to be a Trekkie. He added “I’ve always been convinced that I thought maybe that corner of the royal family were fans.” Although the couple has been scrutinized to an incredible degree, Stewart is a fan.
Stewart commented “I am actually very proud of what they have been doing. It must have taken a great deal of courage and the future is unknown for them. Whereas, as a member of the family, your future is pretty graphed out until the end, and I really admire them.”
Which other royals love ‘Star Trek’?
Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex would not be the first royals to appear on the show. The Atlantic reports King Abdullah II of Jordan (who was merely a prince at the time) had a non-speaking role in one episode of Star Trek: Voyager. King Abdullah is a major fan of the show. He described his cameo in a BBC interview. He said he was casually visiting the show’s set before becoming an extra.
King Abdullah II recalled “I was then told well if you want go through makeup and get into uniform and have some pictures taken with some of the crew and I said why not. Then the next thing, when I actually showed up, they said that if you want you can stand in. So it wasn’t planned it just turned out that way. I had a great time.”
The king continued “It’s a job – I am in full admiration of actors because it is very difficult. They are in very early in the morning. For most of the aliens it’s is three or four hours of make-up and it’s hard work and one that I’m full of admiration that they can do.”
Jeri Taylor, a producer of Voyager, made a famous comment about this cameo. Speaking of the king, she said “Take away the title and the trappings, and at the core you have a Star Trek fan.” Considering King Abdullah II invested in a proposed Star Trek theme park, Taylor is right on the money.
