Pete Wicks will be the first to admit that Sam Thompson “annoys" him but as his best mate, the TOWIE star is supporting him all the way as he lives out his “dream” of starring on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!
Alongside meeting his idols Ant and Dec, Sam is enjoying getting to know the likes of professional boxer Tony Bellew and Britney Spears’ sister, Jamie-Lynn – much to his excitement.
“Every time I see clips of Sam it looks like he's won a competition to be there,” laughs Pete.
“It's the weirdest thing I've ever seen in my life. It's almost like he doesn't understand what's happened.
"I think he's just living out his dream. When he comes back to reality, it's going to be a real shock for him.”
While the Made in Chelsea star has been criticised for being “attention seeking” and “annoying”, Pete says it’s Sam’s energetic and positive personality that makes him such a special friend.
“He’s full on and annoys the s*** out of me, but that’s part and parcel of Sam,” Pete reveals.
“The most beautiful thing about Sam is that he’s unique . He’s a very special man and he’s got a genuine heart. He's one of the most genuine people and all he wants to do is entertain and make people smile. That's why I've missed him because I am much like a lot of people – quite miserable.
“And actually, you need some light to that shade and Sam is always the light. He is just a fabulous energetic, positive person and we all need that in our lives.”
Last week, influencer Nella Rose was branded “insensitive” after she told Sam – who was diagnosed with ADHD in 2022 – to “calm down”.
Nella told EastEnders star Danielle Harold that she needed a moment of “zen” after finding Sam’s mentions of spiders too much to handle.
Pete doesn’t hold any ill feeling towards Nella Rose after her comment, and believes both she and Sam are probably finding the whole experience “overwhelming”.
“It's very overwhelming, especially for those two because they're kind of not used to kind of this,” he says.
“There's some big names in there. Everyone has a different way of dealing with it. Sam should just carry on being him. That's his superpower isn't it? That's the superpower of everyone. We’re all completely and utterly unique.”
As for Pete – who quit TOWIE earlier this year – he’s heading out to Australia to greet Sam upon his exit and enjoy some much-needed downtime after a hectic year.
“2024 is going to be a big and busy one,” he hints.
“I’ve recorded two big primetime TV shows that are going to be out next year, but I can't tell you what they are yet. You'll see a lot of me next year.
“And Sam and I have got some big news coming on the podcast as well. That'll be announced before Christmas, which is great.”
Pete has teamed up with Argos to launch a very special Christmas Gift Hint messaging service to ensure gift-givers are hitting the mark this festive season. Head here to apply https://bit.ly/argoschristmasgifthint
