Ahead of the release of the Power spin-off series, Express.co.uk spoke to star Mekai Curtis about playing Kanan Stark in Raising Kanan. The actor discussed all about the new role, from what it was like going back in time to early 90s New York, to his thoughts on the original Power series. However, Kanan (originally played by 50 Cent) isn’t the only familiar face returning to the Power world for the prequel series as Curtis teased what lies ahead for his on-screen sister, Jukebox (Hailey Kilgore).
In the debut season of Power Book III, Mekai Curtis will play the younger version of the very complicated Kanan Stark – who was originally featured in the series as the former ally to James ‘Ghost St Patrick (Omari Hardwick) and Tommy Egan (Joesph Sikora).
His arrival in the flagship drama was something Ghost and Tommy had feared, as he would return with the intention of taking over their drug empire – after all, he was the one who taught them everything they knew.
And Kanan wasn’t alone in his neverending quest to become top-dog on the New York drug scene as sister Jukebox (originally played by Anika Noni Rose) was by his side to help.
In Power, Kanan and his sister combined to make a formidable partnership and Raising Kanan will delve into the complex backstory between them – although lead star Curtis has insisted you won’t need to be a fan of the original series to enjoy their storyline.

“You don’t have to be a fan of Power to watch our show because, while we are talking about Kanan and Jukebox, their relationship and how that crosses into the original Power, you’re essentially stepping into a new world,” Curtis began to Express.co.uk.
He continued: “An entirely new plotline, entirely new characters, it just happens to be in this universe that we all know and love.
“We’re diving into Kanan’s world the 90’s to see what’s happening over there,” he added.
While viewers may not necessarily “need” to have seen the flagship drama, Curtis did go on to drop some huge clues that’ll undoubtedly excite diehard fans.
When asked what he hopes fans will take away from the drama, the Raising Kanan leading man let slip viewers will finally learn exactly why Jukebox became the murderous and hardened figure she was in the Starz original.
“One; I’m hoping that they [the fans] get to see just how talented these people I work with are, they’re so talented, they’re so good,” Curtis began in his retort.
“And it’s such a joy to get to work with them. Two; I hope they come on Kanan’s journey with us, get into the world, the people that are fans of Power.
“I want them to really appreciate this what it is. They get to ride with him, see how he got to be this crazy-ass person.
“Get to see how Jukebox turned into this person that kind of pulls the strings and rocks Kanan which you never thought would happen.
“Because to start, he’s a terrifying force on his own. But again, going back to being something that not only Power fans can watch.
“I’m excited for just people in general, fans, not fans. I’m excited, for people to see a family story.
“I’m excited to hopefully relate to anything that’s happening in this story because, while it is a family story, really it’s about feeling, emotion, love.
“It’s about environment, it’s about choices (and) what that does and how that affects you.”
Delving into the themes, he added: “I feel like, one of the biggest themes is like a butterfly effect, it’s you reap what you sow.
“Going back, the whole show is connected in one way or another, whether it be a decision somebody made, whether it’s a connection, somebody actually has a relationship, it’s all about how one decision affects this one because we’re all connected, whether we know it or not, especially in this family.”
Power Book III: Raising Kanan premieres on Starzplay on July 18.
