Robbie Williams goes to 'pieces after reading taunts about his weight from Internet trolls' says wife Ayda Field

The singer, 44, – who has previously spoken about his battle with depression – has been banned from looking at social media by the actress, 39, for the duration of their time as judges on The X Factor.

Ayda told The Mail on Sunday that she feared such insults could affect the former Take That star's fragile mental health, as she revealed he has a tendency to seek out unkind comments on his appearance.

She said: "I put him on a computer ban but then he falls off the wagon, he goes down the hole and then I have to pick up those pieces.

"I will definitely ban Rob from social media during the show. He’ll read some nasty comments and then I have to pick him up, dust him off and remind him he’s an incredible human being.

"That’s the funny thing – artists and us creative individuals might appear tough but we’re actually humans with feelings.

"Robbie comes across as arrogant and cocky, but inside he’s a little mushy mensch and he has very soft feelings and a wounded heart.

"When people write bad things about him it hurts. I try to teach Rob to stay away from it – sometimes I have more success than others."

Along with her husband, Ayda is currently a judge on The X Factor alongside Simon Cowell and Louis Tomlinson.

Earlier this year Robbie exclusively spoke to The Sun's Bizarre column about the true extent of his mental health problems.

The star said he’s battling a “disease in my head” which wants to “kill him”, and claimed he’s come close to death “so many times”.

He explained: “Fortunately and unfortunately, left to my own devices, I’m inclined to sabotage everything.

“I’ve got a disease that wants to kill me and it’s in my head, so I have to guard against that.

“Sometimes it overwhelms me and sometimes it’s a tool I need to get on stage. Sometimes I live in bliss and it’s wonderful.

“But most of the time I’m human — having a human experience, trying to deal with the trials and tribulations of what goes on between my ears.”

Last night The X Factor fans hailed the new judging panel as the best one yet as Robbie Williams took centre stage for the new series.

Fans were thrilled by Louis' use of the word "lad", Simon's tiny little blue fan and Robbie taking centre-stage to perform with an auditionee.
