Robron fans in mourning as Ryan Hawley quits Emmerdale after five years

The reports that Ryan Hawley has quit Emmerdale after five years has left one of the soap’s most passionate fandoms distraught.

Ryan’s character Robert Sugden and his husband Aaron Dingle (played by Danny Miller) became a hugely popular couple on the show, with fans affectionately nicknaming them Robron.

Despite initially getting together after an affair, then going through manslaughter, a shooting, a stint in prison and a massive car pile-up on a motorway, the fans’ love for the characters together stayed strong.

But with Ryan departing the show this year, many are wondering what will become of Suggle now.

Understandably the fans are desperate for Robert to still be on good terms with Aaron when he departs, and with the actor said to be ‘taking a break from the show’ rather than outright leaving, it could be seen as a good sign.

And where does his exit leave Robert and Aaron’s plans to adopt a child some time in the future?

Until we know more, the Robron fandom are going to have to find comfort in each other for now, and there has been a lot of outpouring of grief on Twitter.

Still, we can always watch the amazing Super Soap Week episodes, in which Robert popped the question to Aaron moments before a car crash, to console ourselves.

Robert’s recent storylines have seen him make plans to adopt a child with Aaron, and try to support his sister Victoria after her horrific rape ordeal that has resulted in pregnancy.

Out for revenge, the character’s short fuse gets the better of him when the police reveal that they can’t take press charges on her attacker, so takes matters into his own hands.

Ryan is the fourth actor to have played Robert, taking up the role in 2014 and following in the footsteps of Richard Smith, Christopher Smith and Karl Davies.

Some of his major storylines have included covering up the death of his sister-in-law Katie Sugden after she caught him and Aaron kissing while he was married to Chrissie White; and his struggle with his bisexuality.

The actor has won awards for the role, including a Tric Award in 2018 and best soap actor at the TV Choice Awards in 2017.

Emmerdale declined to comment when contacted by Metro.co.uk.
